Cartagena – 03.02.2019

Von meiner Gastfamilie in Covenas musste ich mich nun leider verabschieden. / Unfortunately, I had to say goodbye to my host family at Covenas.

Es wurde Zeit dass ich weiterfahre, denn ich hatte bereits ein Flugticket von Cartagena bis nach Panama Stadt gekauft. / It was high time to go on with my travel as I had bought my flight ticket from Cartagena to Panama City already.

​Von Kolumbien nach Panama gibt es nämlich keine sichere Straßenverbindung. Man muss entweder fliegen oder per Schiff übersetzen. Da jedoch das Flugticket wesentlich billiger ist, entschied ich mich dafür.

There is no safe road connection from Colombia to Panama at all. You either have to go by plane or by boat. The plane ticket is much cheaper, so I chose to fly.

Auf dem Weg nach Cartagena wurde ich von der Polizei angehalten. Das war ungewöhnlich, denn normalerweise kann ich als Fahrradfahrer steht’s weiterfahren ohne kontrolliert zu werden. / I was stopped by the police on my way to Cartagena. This was rather an unusual situation as a biker like me can normally ride on without being controlled.

Die Polizisten verwickelten mich gleich in ein Gespräch mit wirren Fragen. Unter anderem fragten sie, was ich essen würde und wo ich mein Essen kaufe. Dann kam die Überleitung zum Thema Geld. Was für eine Währung ich dabei hätte etc. “Aha, da geht die Reise hin.” Es ging ihnen also ums Geld! “Jede Wette“, hätte ich gesagt dass ich Euro oder Dollar dabei habe, hätten sie es gerne mal aus ‚Interesse‘ angesehen und es dann als ‚Andenken‘ behalten wollen. Die ganze Situation war mir unangenehm und ich war extra ‚honigkuchenfreundlich‘. Schließlich konnte ich doch noch, ohne Bestechungsgeld gezahlt zu haben, weiterfahren.

They started asking me some strange questions right away. Among other things they wanted to know what I eat and where I buy my food. Then they started talking about money. They wanted to know what kind of money I had with me, things like that. So, I thought, „This is what it’s all about. They want some money.“ I bet that, had I told them I had Euros or Dollars with me, they would have wanted to have a look, just out of interest, and they would have wanted to keep the money as a souvenir. The entire situation was awkward and I was extremely friendly and pleasant. Finally I was allowed to move on, without having to pay any bribes.

Abends zeltete ich bei einem Rasthof und aß dort im Restaurant./ That night, I put up my tent at a service area and I also had dinner at the restaurant there.

Ich war gerade am essen, da kam eine ganze Gruppe von Polizisten herein. Einer von ihnen betatschte sogleich die Kellnerin, obwohl man sehen konnte dass es ihr nicht behagte. “Wie unverschämt ist das denn?”, einfach so dreist seine Machtposition als Polizist auszunutzen. Mir kommt es vor, als ob alle korrupten Polizisten von ganz Kolumbien hierher strafversetzt worden sind.

I was busy eating my meal when a whole crowd of police entered the room. One of them pawed at the waitress which she obviously did not like at all. „What a disgrace!“ taking rude advantage of his position as a policeman. It looked to me as if all the corruptible Colombian police had been transferred here for disciplinary reasons.

Am nächsten Morgen war zum Glück keine Polizei nicht mehr in Sicht und ich fuhr gut gelaunt weiter nach Cartagena. Auf dem Weg dort hin durchquerte ich eine schöne Sumpflandschaft in der es wohl auch Krokodile geben soll.

The following morning, fortunately, I didn’t see any police around and I went on toward Cartagena in a good mood. On my way, I passed lovely marshlands where there are supposed to be crocodiles.

In Cartagena schaute ich mir die historische Altstadt an./ I took a good look at the historic old town.

Sie ist superschön und von einer massiven Stadtmauer umgeben. / It is amazing and surrounded by a massive wall.

Außerdem bereitete ich mich in Cartagena auf meinem Flug vor. Ich baute mein Fahrrad auseinander und verpackte es in einen Karton. Mit dem Taxi fuhr ich dann frühmorgens zum Flughafen.

I also prepared myself for my flight from Cartagena. I dismantled my bike and put it in a ​box. Early that morning I took a taxi to the airport.

Problemlos checkte ich ein und kam auch gut durch die Sicherheitskontrolle. / No problem when checking in, nor at the security check.

Unangenehm fand ich aber, dass ich kurz nach der Passkontrolle noch mal extra über meinen Aufenthalt in Kolumbien befragt worden bin. Unterschwellig konnte ich heraushören, dass man mir unterstellte nur wegen Prostitution, Kokain, oder anderen Drogen in Kolumbien gewesen zu sein. Mit diesem Klischee wurde ich schon öfters in Kolumbien konfrontiert und fand das jedes Mal verletzend, weil ich damit absolut nichts zu tun habe.

I didn’t like being asked about my stay in Colombia shortly after they had checked my passport. Subliminally, I felt that they assumed I had been there only for prostitution, cocaine or other drugs. I had had to face this cliché before in Colombia, but it’s always upsetting, as I don’t have anything to do with things like that.

Ansonsten hatte ich aber eine gute Zeit in Kolumbien und auch der Flug nach Panama verlief problemlos. / Other than that I had a really good time in Colombia and the flight to Panama was smooth.
