Einen Traum zu haben ist gut und schön, aber wie kann man diesen Traum erreichen? / Nice thing to have a dream, but how to achieve it?

Fragen über Fragen… / Questions over questions …

Viele Reiseerfahrungen hatte ich vorher noch nicht. Europa hatte ich noch nie verlassen und so eine Reise kostet ja auch eine Menge. Doch wenn ich schon eine Reise plane dann wollte ich so viele Kulturen, Landschaften und unterschiedliche Menschen wie möglich kennenlernen.

I hadn’t been on the road very much yet. I had never left Europe before and a journey like that is expensive, too. But when planning to go on a trip like that I definitely wanted to meet as many cultures, landscapes and different people as possible.

Was tun? / What was I to do?

Ich hörte vom Radreisen. Zunächst fand ich diese Idee verrückt. Sie sprengte einfach meine Vorstellungskraft. Alleine mit einem vollgepackten Fahrrad, ohne gute Sprachkenntnisse, weit weg durch exotische Länder zu fahren. Das klang für mich zunächst unmöglich. Aber umso länger ich darüber nachdachte, um so besser gefiel mir dieser Gedanke.

I learnt about cycle tours. First I thought this idea was crazy. I couldn’t even imagine to go on my own, my bycicle fully loaded, no real knowledge of languages, crossing exotic countries on my way. First I thought it would be impossible. But the more I thought about it the better I liked this idea.

Was sprach dafür? / Pros

Fahrradfahren mag ich gerne. Ich hatte sogar schon einige Mehrtagestouren unternommen. Auch ist so eine Radreise deutlich günstiger, als das klassische Reisen. Aber der für mich überzeugendste Punkt war, dass man mit dem Fahrrad langsam reist und im direkten Kontakt mit seiner Umwelt und den Menschen steht. Wie sonst kann man so etwas erleben.

I like cycling. I had gone through a few multiple days‘ tours before. And, above all, it is much cheaper to go by bike than to travel the classic way. The most impressing point was this one: going by bike is slow and you get into contact with your environment and the people. How else would you ever be able to experience a thing like that?

Ich wollte unbedingt. Mein Entschluss war gefasst! / I was really keen on doing it. I had made my decision.

Doch wohin sollte mich meine Reise führen? / But – where to should I go?

Als ambitioniertes Ziel wählte ich die andere Seite der Welt: Australien. Das erschien mir weit genug weg, um unterwegs zahlreiche Abenteuer zu erleben.

My most ambitious goal was the opposite side of the world: Australia. This seemed to be far away enough so I could experience numerous adventures on my way there.

Von nun an unternahm ich alles, um meine Pläne auch in die Tat umsetzen. / From that day on I did everything to make my plans work.

Ich informierte mich über die unterschiedlichen Länder, denkbare Hindernisse und erarbeitete eine mögliche Route. / I got informed about the different countries, possible obstacles and I worked on a kind of route which would be possible to go on.

Aber das Wichtigste war von nun an Geld zu sparen. Denn ich wollte die komplette Reise ganz ohne Sponsoren durchführen. / But the uppermost idea was saving money as from this moment. I wanted to do my complete journey without any sponsors‘ help.

Eine andere wichtige Vorbereitung war das Setzen eines festen Abreisetermins. Da ich dieses Datum direkt meiner Familie und Freunden mitteilte, hatte ich den nötigen Druck und konnte es nun nicht mehr auf den Sankt Nimmerleinstag verschieben. Mit nur 22 Jahren fuhr ich los.

As important as this was deciding on a deadline by which I would be able to start. I told all my family and friends about the date, so I really had to do it and I couldn’t possibly put my head in the sand. I started at the age of 22.
