05.06.2016 – Kroatien

Nahezu zwei Wochen von meiner Tour bin ich schon in Kroatien.

Kroatien hat eine sehr abwechslungsreiche Landschaft zu bieten. Ich bin sowohl durch fast schon steppenhafte Landschaft, als auch durch Wald, sowie sumpfige oder felsige Gebiete gefahren. Während einer Tagesetappe erlebt man hier diesen Wechsel der Landschaft oft mehrfach.

It has been already two weeks of my tour that I am in Croatia.
Croatia has a very diverse landscape to offer. I have rolled both in the steppe landscapes but also through forests, as in marshy and rocky areas.
During a daily step I experience here this change of scenery often repeatedly.

Wer alleine reist ist nicht ständig alleine. Jeden Tag treffe ich viele Leute, Einheimische, Touristen oder andere Radreisende. Dauernd wollen Leute von mir ein Foto machen, sie hupen oder winken mir aufmunternd zu. Und falls ich doch mal alleine bin, heißt das noch lange nicht das ich einsam bin. Meist genieße ich dann die Ruhe.

The one who travels alone is not constantly alone. Every day I meet a lot of people : native, tourists and other bike-travellers. People want constantly to make a picture of me, they honk me or make me a sign to encourage me. And even when I am alone it’s not for a long time. So most of the time I enjoy the silence.

Wenn ich nicht gerade Radfahre, lese ich, pflege meine Ausrüstung oder schreibe in mein Tagebuch. Ich werde auch öfters zum Essen oder Übernachten eingeladen. Das freut mich immer besonders. So kann ich als Gast sehen wie das Leben, abseits der Touristenströme wirklich ist. Ich muss sagen, bisher bin ich sehr zufrieden.

When I am not biking I read, I take care of my equipment or I write in my logbook. I am also often invited to eat or stay for the night. This always particularly delights me. And so I can, far from crowds of tourists, as a host see how life actually is.   I must say that until now I am very satisfied.

Erstaunlich finde ich, dass ich es bisher kaum mit Muskelkater oder anderen Beschwerden zu tun hatte. Außerdem war ich noch keinen Tag krank, obwohl ich dauernd draußen schlafe. Dazu war es öfters mal nass und kalt und das Umfeld ist auch nicht immer so hygienisch wie zu Hause. Anscheinend ist die Frischluft und die viele Bewegung gut für mich.

I found surprising that until now I have not had too much sore muscles or other discomforts. Moreover I have not been sick a day while I sleep outside. In addition it was often wet and cold and the environment is not always as hygienic as at home. Apparently fresh air and lots of exercise is good for me.

Hin und wieder merke ich aber, dass ich ziemlich müde und manchmal etwas antriebsschwach bin. Dann lege ich ein Pausentag ein und am nächsten Morgen geht es mit frischem Elan weiter.

However I realize that sometimes I am a little tired and that sometimes I ride low. So I foresee a day of rest and the next day I found a new energy .

Von den bisher bereisten Ländern kann ich nicht sagen, welches Land mir am besten gefallen hat. Jedes Land ist auf seine Art schön und auf alle Fälle eine Reise wert.

Among the countries visited so far I cannot say which I preferred .Every country is beautiful in its own way , and all are worth the trip.

05.06.2016 – Kroatien

Hallo zusammen,

aktuell bin ich jetzt in der Nähe der sehr bekannten Stadt Dubrovnik, im Süden von Kroatien. Morgen werde ich bereits die Grenze zu Montenegro überschreiten.

Hello everyone,

Currently I am now near the famous city of Dubrovnik , in southern Croatia. Tomorrow I will already pass the border with Montenegro.

Nach jetzt auf den Tag genau zwei Monaten auf Tour, ist es mal Zeit ein Zwischenfazit zu ziehen. Zur Feier des Tages gönne ich mir heute einen Tag Radfrei Mittlerweile bin ich mehr als 3200 Kilometer mit dem Fahrrad gefahren.

After two months on tour precisely today it is time to draw a preliminary conclusion. To celebrate this day I will grant me today a day without biking, because during this time I rolled with my bike more than 3200 kilometres.

Während den letzten beiden Monaten habe ich viel erlebt. Vieles geht viel einfacher, als ich es mir vorgestellt habe. Zum Beispiel ist es bisher unproblematisch an Trinkwasser zu kommen. Leitungswasser ist hier überall trinkbar. So muss ich nur in Bars oder bei Privathäusern danach fragen.

During this two last months I have learned a lot. Many things were much easier than I had expected. For example until now find drinking water was not problematic. Tap water is drinkable everywhere here. So I have only to ask in bars or in private properties.

Auch einen Zeltplatz zu finden ist meist einfach. Abends versuche ich möglichst Städte zu meiden, da es dort schwieriger ist einen sicheren Platz für die Nacht zu finden. Auf dem Land gibt es meistens genügend Wald zum Zelten. Falls das nicht geht, kann ich immer noch bei Landwirten oder Leuten mit großem Garten nach einem Zeltplatz fragen. Nur höchst selten werde ich abgewiesen.

Finding a land for camping is also usually easier. In the evening I try to avoid the most possible cities because it is there that it is the most difficult to find a safe place for the night. In the countryside there is usually enough forest to camp and if that is not working I can always ask to farmers or to people with a big garden for a field where to camp. It is very rare that I am rejected.

02.06.2016 – Kroatien

Schon nach kurzer Zeit war ich von meinem Schlenker in das Hinterland von Kroatien begeistert. Die kleinen Straßen sind in einem sehr guten Zustand und es gibt hier so gut wie keinen Verkehr. Alle 15 bis 30 Minuten kommt mal ein Auto vorbei, sonst herrscht nur pure Stille. So habe ich mir das vorgestellt. Hier kann man in Ruhe ohne den nervenden Verkehr, die Landschaft und die kleinen, oft sehr einfachen Dörfer bestaunen.

After a short time I was already delighted with my detour inland. The little roads are in very good condition and there is virtually no traffic. Only every 15 to 30 minutes is a car passing, otherwise there is just pure silence. As I expected it, here one can admire landscapes and little villages often very simple without the annoying traffic.

In den Dörfern habe ich manchmal den Eindruck, dass die Zeit stehen geblieben ist. Kühe, Hühner und Ziegen laufen frei durch den Ort und fast jedes Haus hat einen Selbstversorger-Garten.

In the villages I sometimes felt like the time had stopped , cows chickens and goats roam freely through the village and almost every house has an independent garden.

Die Häuser werden auch oft nicht sofort komplett fertig gebaut. Sondern hier baut man zunächst das Erdgeschoss, zieht schon mal ein und wenn dann Zeit und Geld da ist, baut man das nächste Stockwerk. Auffallend ist auch, wieviele Leute hier Deutsch sprechen. Sehr viele Kroaten haben in Deutschland gearbeitet. Ich bekomme von ihnen viel erzählt, über die Geschichte und Gegenwart von Kroatien.

Also houses are not immediately completely built. But here they build first the ground floor, you always need one and if time and money permit,  they build the next floor. What is also striking is that a lot of people speak German here. Lots of Croatians have worked in Germany.

Zwei Mal bin ich eingeladen worden und brauchte nicht im Zelt zu schlafen. Ich bekam sogar meine Wäsche gewaschen und wurde jeweils zum Essen eingeladen. Das freut mich natürlich riesig. Trotzdem habe ich wenn ich zu Gast bin, jedes Mal auch ein schlechtes Gewissen, da ich den Leuten ja nicht auf der Tasche liegen möchte.

I was received by many of them who explained the history and the present in Croatia. Twice I was invited so I do not have to sleep under the tent. I was even able to wash my clothes and each also invited me to dinner. This naturally pleased me enormously . However every time I am invited I feel guilty for living off people .

30.05.2016 – Kroatien

Nachdem ich schon einige Tage an der kroatischen Küste entlang gefahren bin, entschied ich mich nahe Sibenik einen Abstecher ins Landesinnere zu wagen. Ich wollte mir die weltberühmten Wasserfälle in Krka anschauen. Dort angekommen entpuppten sich die Wasserfälle als Nationalpark, für den man 14,- € Eintritt zahlen sollte. Da ich auch schon einige beeindruckende Wasserfälle in der Schweiz gesehen habe, war mir das dann doch zu viel.

After riding a few days on the Croatian coast, near Sbenik I have finally take a detour inland.
I wanted to contemplate the world famous waterfalls of Krka. Once arrived there the waterfalls proven to be a national park for which I was supposed to pay 14 euros. Since I had seen some waterfalls in Switzerland before, it seemed to me much.

Was jetzt ? Den gesamten Weg wieder zurückfahren? Auf der Karte sah ich mehrere kleinere Straßen, die im Hinterland parallel zur Küste verlaufen. Allerdings hat man mich mehrfach gewarnt: „Das Hinterland ist sehr bergig, bleib doch an der Küste!“ Ich wollte aber nicht den gleichen Weg zurückfahren, deswegen entschied ich mich einfach diese Straßen auszuprobieren.

And now ? Turn back all the way? On the map I have seen a lot of little roads which snaked hinterland, parallel to the coast. However they warned me many times “Hinterland is very mountainous, so stay on the coast !”. But I did not want to turn back the way so I have simply decided to try those roads.

26.05.2016 – Kroatien

Auf der Insel Pag angekommen, war es mittlerweile 22:00 Uhr und stockdunkel. Aber ich musste noch 180 Höhenmeter überwinden. Also machte ich mich und mein Fahrrad für meine erste Nachtfahrt fit. Ein zusätzliches blinkendes Licht hinten, für die bessere Sichtbarkeit und dazu noch eine Stirntaschenlampe für meine bessere Sicht, verschaffte mir ein großes Plus an Sicherheit.

At the arrival on the island of Pag it was now 10 p.m. and it was pitch dark. But I still have to overcome 180 meters. So I prepared myself and I adjusted my bike for my first night path. A rear flashing light for better visibility plus a front flashlight for my own best visibility which bring me a big plus and safety.

Aber bevor es losging musste ich noch meine Vorräte an Trinkwasser auffüllen. Also fragte ich in einer Kiosk-Bar ob sie Wasser hätten. „Nein“, sie hatten kein fließendes Wasser. Da blieb mir nur noch eins: Zur Fähre zurück und dort nachfragen. Hier sagte man mir, dass ich die Flaschen einfach am Waschbecken des Schiffs WC auffüllen kann. Auf meine Frage: „Ist das auch Trinkwasser?“, kam nur ein wenig überzeugendes: „I think so“. Also desinfizierte ich zum ersten Mal das Wasser mit einer meiner Chlortabletten. „Na Mahlzeit !“

But before lI could leave I still had to replenish my water.So I asked to a kiosk-bar if they had water. “No” they did not have drinking water. The time to return and there remained only one to which I could ask. I was told that I could just fill my bottle of the tap toilet. To my question “Is it drinking water?” came only an unconvincing “I think so”. So for the first time I disinfected the water with one of my chlorine tablets. “ Well bon appetit”

Gegen 23 Uhr erreichte ich endlich den Campingplatz. Den mir zugewiesenen Stellplatz konnte ich aber in der Dunkelheit nicht finden. So habe ich das Zelt einfach irgendwo auf einer leeren Parzelle aufgebaut.

Around 11 I finally arrived at the camping. But in the darkness I could not find my emplacement. So I just set up my tent somewhere on an empty plot.

Jetzt musste ich unbedingt noch etwas essen, also begab ich mich erst mal schnell ans Kochen. Dann konnte ich endlich – nach über 100 Kilometer und bestimmt 900 Höhenmetern – ins Zelt kriechen. Morgen habe ich mir einen Pausentag verdient ! Den Wecker kann ich ausschalten.

Now I still absolutely need to eat something therefore for the first time I started quickly to cook. Then I finally could –after a hundred kilometers and probably 900 meters high- crawl to my tent. Tomorrow I deserved a break ! So I can turn off the alarm clock.

26.05.2016 – Kroatien

Am nächsten Morgen bin ich erst um 9 Uhr aufgestanden. Wie üblich brauchte ich auch heute 2 Stunden für das Zusammenpacken, das Rad ausrüsten und zum Frühstücken.

The next morning I woke up only at 9. As usual it took me another two hours to pack up, equip the bike and breakfast.

Um 11 Uhr saß ich endlich auf dem Rad. Heute ist Feiertag in Kroatien und so waren auf den Straßen deutlich weniger LKWs unterwegs. Jetzt konnte ich die Landschaft, die wirklich sehr schön ist viel besser genießen.

At 11 I finally sat on my bike. Today is a public holiday in Croatia so there was  significantly less trucks on the road. Now I can appreciate the landscape a lot better which is very beautiful.

Gegen Nachmittag sind mir dann erste Party-Touristen begegnet, die alle auf dem Weg zur wohl legendären ‚Springbreak Party‘ nach Pag waren. Eine griechische Gruppe feierte am Straßenrand einen Junggesellenabschied und reichte mir, als ich gerade vorbei radeln wollte, einen Becher Wein. Nach meinem Einwand: „Ich muss noch weiterfahren“, wurde der Wein mit Wasser verdünnt. Nach diesem Becher, der auch nicht wirklich meine Kondition steigerte, setzte ich meien Fahrt fort und erreichte gegen Abend die Fähre.

In the afternoon I met the first  party-tourists which were all on their way to Pag for the legendary Spring break party. A group of Greek were celebrating a bachelor funeral just on the side of the road and asked me when I passed with my bike if I wanted a glass of wine. After my objection “I must continue” the wine was diluted with water. After this glass, which didn’t improve my condition, I kept on rolling and I reached the ferry in the evening.

An Bord wurde ich von einer Gruppe österreichischer Motorradfahrer über meine Tour ausgefragt und schließlich trank ich mit ihnen zwei Dosen Bier.

On board I have been questioned on my trip by a group of Austrian bikers  and finally I drank two beer cans with them.

25.05.2016 – Kroatien

Pozdrav Ljudi, hallo Leute

ich bin jetzt in Kroatien unterwegs. Kroatien hat eine echt sehr schöne Küste mit natürlichen Buchten. Aber ebenso gibt es hier eine recht gute Infrastruktur für Touristen. Die Landschaft ist sehr, sehr bergig. Dauernd geht es hoch, manchmal bis auf über 300 Meter und dann im nächsten Moment fährt man wieder auf Meereshöhe runter.

Pozdrav Ljudi, (“Hi guys” in Croatian)

I am now on my way to Croatia. Croatia has a very beautiful coast with a natural bay. But moreover there is here a quite good Infrastructure for tourists. The Landscape is very very mountainous. It constantly rises sometimes up to 300 meters and the next moment we roll down again until the seaside level.

 Auf einem sehr kleinen Campingplatz (Einmann-Betrieb – solche Plätze gibt es hier öfter) kam ich mit einigen slowenischen Dauercampern ins Gespräch. Sie luden mich zum Weintrinken ein und berieten mich, wie meine weitere Strecke aussehen könnte. Schließlich sind wir zu dem Entschluss gekommen, dass ich bis Prizna fahre und dann per Fähre auf die Insel Pag übersetze.

In a very small camping (a Sole-Shareholder company- so quite often there is such places) I came to talk with a Slovenian permanent camper. He invited me to drink wine and show me how will look like my next itinerary. At the end we arrived to the conclusion that I will roll until Prizna and then I will take the ferry to reach the island of Pag.

Von dort aus muss ich dann nicht mehr über die bergige – und vor allem stark befahrene – Küstenstraße weiter, sondern kann quer über die Insel radeln. Über eine Brücke kann ich dann wieder auf das Festland gelangen.

From there I will not need to follow the coast mountainous road anymore – mostly very dangerous- but could ride on straight lines across the island. By a bridge I could then rejoin the continent.

„Eine gute Idee“, aber bis ich bei der Fähre sein werde liegen noch hundert Kilometer Küstenstraße vor mir. Ob ich die ganze Strecke wohl in einem Tag packe? Meine Voraussetzungen dazu sind schon mal nicht gut. Bis 1.00 Uhr nachts habe ich mit den anderen Campern Wein getrunken und dementsprechend schlapp werde ich wohl am nächsten Tag sein.

 “A good idea” but before I get on the ferry I still have a hundred kilometres of coast road before me . If I buckled the full extend in one day? My condition for this is not very good. Until 1 in the morning I drank wine with the others campers therefore tomorrow I will be a softy.
