Costa Rica – 23.03.2019

Costa Rica empfing mich mit flirrender Hitze und einer langen, einsamen Straße. Nur ab und zu kam ich an kleinen Ortschaften vorbei. Das Fahrradfahren machte mir hier keinen Spaß, es entwickelte sich immer mehr zur Qual.

Costa Rica received me with shimmering heat and a long, lonely road. Every now and them I passed small villages. Cycling wasn’t fun here, it was agony, more and more.

Costa Rica ist außerdem ein ziemlich teures Land. Hotelübernachtungen kommen also für mich nicht in Frage. Deswegen zeltete ich vermehrt./ Costa Rica is also quite expensive. I wasn’t able to stay in hotels. So I camped more often.

Bei meiner zweiten Übernachtung in Costa Rica fragte ich bei einer Polizeistation nach, ob es ein Platz zum Zelten gäbe. Ich durfte gleich gegenüber der Polizeistation mein Zelt aufbauen. Dort gab es auch einen Wasserhahn den ich benutzen durfte. Super, so konnte ich mich nach dem anstrengenden Tag waschen.

The second night I asked at the police station if they’d let me camp somewhere there. I was allowed to camp opposite the police station. There was a tap which I was allowed to use. That was super as I was able to wash myself after a strenuous day.

Gerade war ich fertig als ein Polizist auf mich zukam und mir zu verstehen gab, dass ich etwas Verbotenes gemacht hätte. Ich wusste nicht was er meinte. Es stellte sich heraus dass er es problematisch fand, das ich mich hier waschen würde. Einige Passanten hätten mich theoretisch dabei sehen können. Ich hatte extra darauf geachtet, dass man absolut nichts sehen konnte und die Wäsche angelassen und somit alle sensiblen Stellen immer bedeckt gehalten.

Having done so I saw a policeman coming up to me and telling me I had done something that wasn’t allowed. I didn’t know what he was talking about. Apparently it was because my washing myself was the problem. Some bypassers might have seen me. I had been careful that nobody could observe me, left my clothes on and kept everything covered.

Aber dennoch man gab mir zu verstehen, dass das in Costa Rica nicht gehen würde. Ich beschloss daraufhin diese Polizeistation mit ihren merkwürdigen Polizisten zu verlassen und doch noch weiter zu fahren. Schließlich zeltete ich neben einer Raststätte.

Still, he told me that this would not be accepted in Costa Rica. So I decided to leave the police station with its strange police officers and travel on. Finally I camped next to a rest area.

Am nächsten Tag beschloss ich einen Termin bei der US Botschaft in San José, der Hauptstadt Costa Ricas auszumachen. Da ich ja durch den Iran gereist bin kann ich nun nicht mehr an ESTA teilnehmen. Mit Esta (einer elektronischen Voranmeldung) kann man normalerweise als deutscher Staatsbürger recht einfach in die USA einreisen und dort bis zu 3 Monate bleiben.

The following day I decided to make an appointment at the US embassy at San José, which is Costa Rica’s capital city. As I have traveled the Iran I will not be allowed to participate in the ESTA process. ESTA is an electronic pre-announcement which allows a German citizen to enter the USA easily and stay there for up to 3 months.

Ich allerdings muss ein richtiges Touristenvisa in der US Botschaft beantragen. / I have to ask for a real tourist visa at the US embassy.

Um überhaupt einen Termin in der Botschaft zu erhalten musste ich vorab 160 Dollar Visagebühr online bezahlen. Der erste Versuch mit meiner Kreditkarte funktionierte nicht. Ich las: “Nur Debit Karten akzeptiert“. Also versuchte ich es auch noch mit meiner Debit Karte. Es funktionierte tatsächlich. Doch wenig später registrierte ich, dass auch von meiner Kreditkarte 160 Dollar abgebucht worden sind. Ich schrieb unmittelbar die Botschaft an, diese wollten mir das zuviel bezahlte Geld aber nicht erstatten. Unverschämt so etwas! Doch als ich das Geld schon gänzlich abgeschrieben hatte, schaute ich nach einer Woche wieder auf meine Kreditkartenabrechnung. Ich stellte fest dass die Zahlung nur vorgebucht, aber zum Glück nie verbucht worden ist.

I had to pay $160 in advance and online in order to get the appointment as such. My first attempt by visa card didn’t work out. They accept only debit cards. so I tried out my debit card which did. A little later I found out that they had debited my credit card with $160 as well. I wrote a mail to the embassy but they weren’t prepared to refund the money. Outrageous! But when I looked at my account a week later, I learned that the money hadn’t been deducted after all. Fortunately.

Weiter fuhr ich an Costa Ricas heißer Pazifikküste entlang und schlagartig wurde es sehr touristisch. Ich bog schließlich zu einem der touristischen Orte ab “Quepos”. / I traveled on alongside Costa Rica’s hot Pacific coast and all of a sudden things got very touristic. Finally I went to one of the touristic places called Quepos.

Hier gibt es den kleinen aber sehr bekannten Manuel Antonio Nationalpark, den ich mir angucken wollte. Der Eintritt war nicht gerade günstig. Außerdem musste ich mich schon um 7 Uhr morgens, eine Stunde bevor er überhaupt aufmachte, am Parkeingang anstellen. Nur so hatte ich eine Chance eingelassen zu werden.

Finally I went to one of the touristic places called Quepos. There is a small but very well known Manuel Antonio National Park which I wanted to visit. The entrance fee wasn’t cheap. I had to wait in line from 7 in the morning, one hour before opening time, at the park entrance. This was the only chance of gaining access.

Nach gut 2 Stunden anstellen würde ich tatsächlich doch noch hineingelassen und sah auch viele Tiere. / After more than two hours wait I was finally allowed in. I saw a lot of animals.

Es gibt hier Faultiere und sehr freche Affen und Waschbären. Man muss aufpassen, dass diese einem nicht das Essen oder sogar den ganzen Rucksack klauen. Die Tiere sind Touristenmassen gewöhnt und sehr gewieft was das Stehlen angeht.

There are many sloths and very naughty monkeys and racoons. You have to watch out for them, as they steal away your food or even your whole rucksack. The animals are used to the many tourists and they are very smart as far as stealing is concerned.

 

Nach der Besichtigung des Nationalparks fuhr ich am Nachmittag weiter nach San José . Diesmal allerdings per Bus. Mein Termin in der amerikanischen Botschaft stand an und ich hatte keine Zeit mehr dorthin mit dem Fahrrad zu fahren.

Having finished my visit at the National Park I traveled on to San José. I took the bus this time. I was expecting my appointment at the US embassy and time was running short. I couldn’t go there by bike.

In der Stadt bereitete ich mich auf meinen Botschaftstermin vor. Alle elektronischen Geräte, also auch Handys, sind dort nämlich verboten. Nur persönliche Unterlagen sind erlaubt. Taschen und alles andere darf man nicht mithinein nehmen. Ich ließ noch schnell beim Fotografen Passbilder im vorgeschriebenen Format anfertigen, dann fuhr ich per Taxi zur US Botschaft.

I prepared myself for my appointment. You are not allowed any electronic devices, no cell phones, in there. Only personal papers are allowed in. No bags, nothing. I had some photos taken in the format required, then I took a taxi to the embassy.

Nach gut einer Stunde Warten wurde ich zu einer hinter Panzerglas sitzenden Angestellten gerufen. Nach nur 2 Minuten ließ sie mich wissen, dass ich kein Visa bekomme. Der Grund wurde mir nicht genannt. Vermutlich lag es daran, dass ich momentan keinen Job in Deutschland vorweisen kann. Das ich ausreichend finanzielle Mittel habe, interessierte nicht. Ich konnte es kaum glauben. Die 160 Dollar Visagebühr sind weg für nichts! Wütend und enttäuscht machte ich mich auf den Heimweg. Die USA ist somit das einzige Land, das ich während meiner gesamten Weltreise nicht bereisen kann. Naja was soll es, dann werde ich eben die USA auslassen.

After having been waiting there for one hour someone called me to a clerk sitting behind bulletproof glass. Only two minutes later she let me know that I wasn’t going to get a visa. No reason given. Maybe it was because I don’t have a job in Germany at present. She wasn’t interested in learning that I have ample money. It was unbelievable! $160 for the visa gone, for bugger all! I was angry and disappointed and left the embassy. So I won’t be able to visit the USA, the only country I have to leave out on my world trip. Okay, so what! No USA for me, then!

Momentan läuft es bei mir echt nicht. Ich habe im Moment ein ziemliches Tief, aber das gehört zum Reisen auch dazu. / I’m not doing so well at the moment! I’m depressed! Traveling includes things like that, too.

Zum Glück werde ich demnächst Abwechslung bekommen. Meine Eltern haben sich angekündigt. Sie wollen mich schon in wenigen Wochen in Guatemala besuchen kommen. Von da aus werden wir zusammen bis nach Mexiko Stadt reisen. So bleibt mir nur noch wenig Zeit um bis nach Guatemala zu fahren. Meine Motivation immer weiter mit dem Fahrrad zu fahren ist momentan auch nicht zum Besten. Deswegen beschloss ich mit dem Bus bis zur Grenze nach Nicaragua zu fahren.

I’m looking forward to a welcome change. My parents are coming. They are visiting me in Guatemala in a few weeks‘ time. We will go on from there, travel to Mexico City first. So time is running short for my trip to Guatemala. I’m not so keen on going all the way on and on by bike forever. That’s why I decided to take the bus to the border of Nicaragua.
