Von Rasht aus ging es weiter am kaspischen Meer entlang. Heute ist das Aschura Fest im Iran. Das ist der Höhepunkt eines ca. 1 Monat dauerndes Festes, das dem Gedenken der Ermordung des Imam Husain dient, der vor ca. 1300 Jahren mit seinen Gefolgsleuten umgebracht wurde.

Having started in Rasht I traveled towards the Caspian Sea. This was the day of the Iranian Ashura Feast. It lasts for about a month and this day is the highlight. It is a feast celebrated in memory of Imam Husain who was murdered about 1,300 years ago together with his entire entourage. He was the third follower of Mohammed who was acknowledged by the Shiites. After Prophet Mohammed’s death there was a controversy over succession which led to the first segregation in the Islam into Shiites and Sunnites. Turkey, for example, is rather Sunni-dominated and Iran rather Shiitic. This was the Imam Husain Memorial Day all over Iran. I even witnessed people crying for him collectively.

Er war dritte, der von den Schiiten anerkannten Nachfolger von Mohammed. Nach dem Tod des Propheten Mohammeds gab es ein Nachfolgestreit, der zur ersten Spaltung des Islams in Schiiten und Sunniten führte. Zum Beispiel ist die Türkei eher sunnitisch geprägt und der Iran schiitisch. Heute wird im ganzen Iran an den Tod des Imam Husain gedacht. Es wird sogar kollektiv um ihn geweint, das habe ich aber nicht miterleben dürfen.

Im ganzen Land wird umsonst Mittagessen und Tee ausgegeben. Dies soll die letzte Mahlzeit des Imam Husain symbolisieren, die wie damals aus Reis, etwas Hühnchen und Soße besteht.

Ich bekam bestimmt 10 Mal eine dieser Mahlzeiten von Autofahrern aus dem Fenster gereicht. Soviel kann ich beim besten Willen nicht essen. Die meisten Leute akzeptierten die Begründung: „Ich habe schon gegessen“, wenn ich dankend ablehnte. Aber 4 Mal hatte ich das Gefühl, dass es komisch aufgefasst wird, wenn ich ablehne. Das ist wohl die persische Sitte, in der das Ablehnen von Essen, als Beleidigung aufgenommen werden kann. Also nahm ich das angebotene Essen, dann doch an.

I must have been given this meal for at least ten times that day, offered by car drivers through the open car windows. I can’t possibly eat that much, so I declined with thanks. Most people accepted my apology of having already eaten. But at least four times I felt they didn’t like my refusal at all. I suppose that it is Persian custom to feel insulted when someone rejects a gift. So I decided to accept the food after all.
