🔄 Vom Süden in den Norden/ From the South to the North

Wie ich bereits berichtet habe, hatten sich zwei meiner Kollegen aus Uganda auf einen Austausch in Deutschland beworben:
Zum einen der Biologische Ingenieur Günther, und zum anderen Matthew, ein Elektriker.
Und tatsächlich – die Organisationen SES und AGYO nahmen beide Bewerbungen an und kontaktierten mich, um bei der Suche nach passenden Einsatzstellen zu helfen.

As I mentioned earlier, two of my colleagues from Uganda applied for an exchange program in Germany: one was Günther, a biomedical engineer, and the other was Matthew, an electrician.
Indeed, the organizations SES and AGYO accepted both applications and reached out to me to help find suitable host institutions.

Daraufhin kontaktierte ich das örtliche Krankenhaus in Prüm für Günther und fragte bei meinem Chef nach einer Möglichkeit für Matthew in meiner Firma.
Glücklicherweise waren sowohl das Krankenhaus als auch mein Arbeitgeber offen für diese Idee und stimmten einem möglichen Austausch zu.

I contacted the local hospital in Prüm for Günther and asked my boss whether there might be an opportunity for Matthew at my company.
Fortunately, both the hospital and my employer were open to the idea and agreed to support an exchange.

Kurz darauf stellte sich heraus, dass Günther bereits ein Stipendium in Italien erhalten hatte – eine großartige Chance, die er natürlich vorzog.
Für Matthew jedoch blieb der Austausch in Aussicht.
Nach einem kurzen Kennenlernen zwischen allen Beteiligten begann die Organisation seines Visums, bei der der SES ihn unterstützte.

Shortly after, it turned out that Günther had already been awarded a scholarship in Italy – a great opportunity he understandably chose to pursue.
For Matthew, however, the exchange remained possible.
After a brief introduction between all parties, the visa process began, with SES assisting him in the application.

🛫 Ein langer Weg nach Europa/ A Long Journey to Europe

Leider kam es dabei zu Verzögerungen, und der erste Visumsantrag wurde von der deutschen Botschaft abgelehnt.
Der geplante Zeitraum drohte zu verstreichen, und das Projekt stand kurz vor dem Aus.
Doch Matthew gab nicht auf.
In Eigeninitiative stellte er einen zweiten Antrag – und diesmal mit Erfolg!

Unfortunately, delays occurred, and the first visa application was rejected by the German embassy. The planned timeframe was running out, and the exchange was in danger of being cancelled.
But Matthew didn’t give up.
On his own initiative, he submitted a second application – and this time, it was approved!

Kurz darauf organisierte der SES den nächstmöglichen Flug nach Luxemburg – dem nächstgelegenen Flughafen von Prüm.
Am 09. Mai 2025 holte ich Matthew dort persönlich ab.

Soon after, SES organized the next available flight to Luxembourg – the closest airport to Prüm. On May 9, 2025, I personally picked Matthew up there.

Später erzählte Matthew lachend, dass er, als wir aus dem Flughafen kamen, zunächst dachte, wir würden in eine weitere riesige, klimatisierte Halle gehen – so kühl war es für ihn.
Er hatte sein ganzes Leben in den Tropen verbracht und noch nie solche Temperaturen erlebt.
Als er nach oben blickte und nur den Himmel sah, musste er lachen.

Later, Matthew told me with a smile that when we stepped out of the airport, he thought we were walking into another huge, air-conditioned hall – it was that cold for him.
Having lived his whole life in the tropics, he had never experienced such low temperatures.
When he looked up and saw only the sky, he laughed out loud.

🎂 Ein Geburtstag zum Einleben/ A Birthday to Settle In

Nur einen Tag später feierten wir meinen 32. Geburtstag.
Während der Feier lernte Matthew auch zum ersten Mal seine neuen Kollegen Torsten und Tamara kennen.
Am darauffolgenden Montag begann sein erster Arbeitstag.

Just one day later, we celebrated my 32nd birthday.
During the party, Matthew met his new colleagues, Torsten and Tamara, for the first time.
The following Monday marked his first day at work.

Frühmorgens gab es eine kurze Einsatzbesprechung, und dann ging es direkt auf die Baustelle.
Ich glaube, das war für Matthew ein kleiner Kulturschock:
Gerade am Montagmorgen gibt es in Deutschland kaum Smalltalk – nur eine schnelle Besprechung, dann wird gearbeitet.
Ganz anders als in Uganda.

Early in the morning, there was a short briefing, and then we headed straight to the construction site.
I think that was a small culture shock for Matthew:
In Germany, especially on Monday mornings, there’s hardly any small talk – just a quick meeting and then straight to work. Very different from Uganda.

🤝 Zwischen Arbeit und Freizeit/Between Work and Freetime

Generell wurde Matthew sehr gut aufgenommen, auch wenn es anfangs etwas dauerte,
bis sich alle Kollegen trauten, auf Englisch mit ihm zu sprechen.
Ich fand es schön, dass meine Firma mir Zeit gab, ihm alles zu zeigen und viele Dinge zu erklären.
Nach wenigen Wochen war Matthew ein fester Teil des Teams – fast wie ein Familienmitglied.

Overall, Matthew was very warmly welcomed, although it took some time before everyone felt confident enough to speak English with him.
I appreciated that my company gave me the time to show him around and explain many things.
After just a few weeks, Matthew had become a solid part of the team – almost like a family member.

Neben der Arbeit unternahmen wir auch gemeinsame Ausflüge.
Wir besuchten ein englisches Theaterstück in Luxemburg-Stadt und den Kölner Zoo.
Dort sah Matthew zum ersten Mal Tiere wie Elefanten, Zebras, Giraffen oder Löwen – Tiere, die eigentlich in seiner Heimat Uganda heimisch sind.

Outside of work, we also took trips together.
We attended an English theater play in Luxembourg City and visited the Cologne Zoo.
There, Matthew saw elephants, zebras, giraffes, and lions for the first time – animals that are actually native to his home country, Uganda.

Er sagte mir, dass es für ihn fast ironisch sei, diese Tiere nun ausgerechnet in Deutschland zu sehen, wo sie gar nicht heimisch sind.
In seiner Region würden viele größere Tiere wegen Armut und Hunger gejagt.
Wildtiere gäbe es dort fast nur noch in Schutzgebieten, deren Besuch für normale Menschen unerschwinglich ist.

He told me it felt almost ironic to see these animals here in Germany, where they aren’t native at all.
In his region, many large animals are hunted due to poverty and hunger.
Wildlife can mostly only be seen in nature reserves, which are far too expensive for ordinary people to visit.

Besonders in Erinnerung blieb uns auch der Ausflug nach Duisburg,
bei dem wir Wolle besuchten und gemeinsam das Stahlwerk – Wolles früheren Arbeitgeber – besichtigten.
Gigantisch, wie dort Stahl produziert wird, welcher technische Aufwand dahintersteckt und bei welchen Temperaturen gearbeitet wird.
Diesen Eindruck kann kaum jemand gewinnen – öffentliche Führungen gibt es dort schon seit Jahren nicht mehr.

Another special memory was our trip to Duisburg,
where we visited Wolle and toured the steel plant – his former workplace.
It was fascinating to see how steel is produced, the enormous technical effort behind it, and the extreme temperatures involved.
It’s an experience few people ever get – public tours have not been offered there for years.

Ein weiterer spannender Einblick bot sich uns im Prümer Krankenhaus.
Monique von der Mitarbeitervertretung und Stefan von der Haustechnik führten uns einen Tag lang durch das Gebäude
und erklärten dabei alle technischen Details ausführlich.
So wurden die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen dem Gesundheitswesen
und der Krankenhaustechnik in Matany (Uganda) und Prüm (Deutschland) eindrucksvoll sichtbar.

We also gained another fascinating insight at the hospital in Prüm.
Monique from the staff council and Stefan from the technical department guided us through the hospital for a day,
explaining all the technical details in depth.
It was an impressive way to see both the similarities and the differences between the healthcare systems and hospital technology in Matany (Uganda) and Prüm (Germany)

🎉 Matthews erster Geburtstagfeier/ Matthew’s First Birthdaypaty

Ein besonderer Moment, an den ich mich besonders gerne zurückerinnere,
war Matthews erste Geburtstagsfeier seines Lebens.
Er erzählte uns, dass es in seinem Umfeld nicht üblich sei, Geburtstage zu feiern.
Umso schöner war es, dass wir seinen allerersten Geburtstag gemeinsam feiern konnten.

A special moment I remember fondly was Matthew’s first-ever birthday celebration.
He told us that celebrating birthdays is not common in his community.
All the more special was that we were able to celebrate his very first birthday together.

🌍 Begegnung auf Augenhöhe/Encounter on Equal Terms

Vieles war für Matthew neu und ganz anders.
Manches bestimmt auch fremd oder anfangs überfordernd – aber er machte immer das Beste daraus und blieb offen für alles.
Er brachte Wärme, Humor und einen besonderen Teamgeist mit, der uns allen guttat.

Many things were new and very different for Matthew.
Some may have felt strange or overwhelming at first – but he always made the best of it and stayed open to everything.
He brought warmth, humor, and a special team spirit that enriched us all.

Insgesamt war der Austausch für alle Beteiligten ein voller Erfolg.
Meine Firma war mit Matthew sehr zufrieden, und auch er konnte viele Eindrücke und Erfahrungen sammeln, die er zurück in Uganda direkt anwenden möchte.
Alle Beteiligten hatten voneinander gelernt – fachlich, menschlich und kulturell.

Overall, the exchange was a complete success for everyone involved.
My company was very pleased with Matthew, and he gained many impressions and insights that he plans to apply back home in Uganda.
Everyone learned from one another – professionally, personally, and culturally.

✈️ Abschied und Ausblick/Farewell and Outlook

Zum Abschluss gab es ein gemeinsames Abendessen mit meinen Eltern, Kollegen, Maury und mir – ein emotionaler Moment voller Dankbarkeit.
Am nächsten Morgen fuhr ich Matthew zum Flughafen.
In seinem Gepäck: zahlreiche kleine Mitbringsel, viele Erfahrungen – und neue Freundschaften.

At the end of his stay, we shared a farewell dinner with my parents, colleagues, Maury, and me – an emotional moment full of gratitude.
The next morning, I drove Matthew to the airport.
In his luggage: small gifts, countless experiences – and new friendships.

Der Austausch mag vorbei sein, aber unsere Freundschaft ist es nicht.
Wir bleiben in Kontakt – und wer weiß, vielleicht führt uns der nächste Austausch ja wieder zusammen.

The exchange may have ended, but our friendship has not.
We stay in touch – and who knows, perhaps the next exchange will bring us together again.

✈️ Abschied mit gemischten Gefühlen/ Leaving with Mixed Feelings

Nach vier intensiven Wochen in Matany fiel mir der Abschied schwer.
Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass die Zeit dort mich mehr verändert hatte, als ich in diesem Moment begreifen konnte.
Wir versuchten, die verbleibenden Tage sinnvoll zu nutzen und noch offene Aufgaben zu erledigen.

Als wir uns vom Team verabschiedeten, gab es eine emotionale Runde, in der jeder ein paar Worte sagte.
Zum Abschied erhielten wir sogar traditionelle Kleidung – ein bewegender Moment, in dem ich große Dankbarkeit und Stolz empfand,
dieses Krankenhaus mit unserer Arbeit unterstützt zu haben – aber auch ein Stück Wehmut.

After four intense weeks in Matany, saying goodbye was hard.
I felt that my time there had changed me more than I could yet understand.
We tried to make good use of the remaining days and complete the last open tasks.

When we said farewell to the team, everyone shared a few words, and we even received traditional clothing as a farewell gift – a moving moment filled with gratitude and pride for having supported this hospital with our work, but also with a touch of melancholy.

Ich war froh und stolz auf das, was wir geschafft hatten, und gleichzeitig traurig, all die Menschen zurückzulassen,
mit denen wir so eng zusammengearbeitet hatten.
Matany war für mich mehr geworden als nur ein Einsatzort – es war ein Stück Leben auf Zeit.

I was proud of what we had accomplished and, at the same time, sad to leave behind the people I had worked so closely with.
Matany had become more than just a workplace – it had become a temporary home.

🛬 Zurück in Deutschland/ Back in Germany

Als ich wieder in Deutschland landete, war es ein seltsames Gefühl.
Einerseits freute ich mich, Maury, meine Familie und Freunde wiederzusehen,
andererseits war mein Kopf noch voller Eindrücke aus Uganda.
Der Kontrast konnte kaum größer sein:
Während es in Uganda um wirklich wesentliche, oft lebenswichtige Dinge ging,
drehte sich hier vieles plötzlich um Details, die mir im Vergleich unbedeutend erschienen –
etwa ob eine Lampe exakt in einer Linie mit einer Lüftung montiert ist oder nicht.

When I landed back in Germany, it felt strange.
On one hand, I was happy to see Maury, my family, and friends again;
on the other hand, my head was still full of impressions from Uganda.
The contrast couldn’t have been greater:
While my work there had focused on truly essential, often life-critical things,
here it seemed to revolve around minor details – like whether a lamp is perfectly aligned with a ventilation grid or not.

Der Alltag kam schnell zurück, aber vieles fühlte sich anders an.
Ich ertappte mich oft dabei, an die Menschen in Matany zu denken –
an die Stromausfälle, die Improvisation, aber auch an das Lachen und die Geduld meiner Kollegen.

Everyday life returned quickly, but much felt different.
I often found myself thinking of the people in Matany – the power cuts, the constant improvisation, and also the laughter and patience of my colleagues.

⚙️ Zwischen Welten/ Between Two Worlds

Zurück im Berufsleben erzählte ich meinen Kollegen von der Arbeit in Matany.
Manche hörten interessiert zu, andere konnten sich kaum vorstellen, wie anders die Bedingungen dort sind.
Ich merkte, dass man so eine Erfahrung schwer in Worte fassen kann – man muss sie selbst erlebt haben.

Back at work, I told my colleagues about our time in Matany.
Some listened with interest, others could hardly imagine how different the conditions were.
I realized that such experiences are hard to put into words – you have to live them to understand them.

Maury und ich sprachen oft darüber, was bleibt –
über den Sinn von Entwicklung, über kulturelle Unterschiede und darüber, wie Begegnungen uns verändern.
Langsam kehrte Normalität ein – aber es war nicht mehr dieselbe Normalität wie vorher.

Maury and I often talked about what remains – about the meaning of development, cultural differences, and how encounters change us.
Gradually, daily life returned – but it wasn’t the same as before.
