Gerade in Myanmar angekommen, sagte uns einer der Grenzbeamten, dass es in den nächsten 146 Kilometer nicht erlaubt ist zu zelten und es auch keine andere Übernachtungsmöglichkeit gibt. Deswegen beschlossen wir die Strecke bis Kalay mit einem Minibus zurückzulegen. Ein netter Mitarbeiter des Registrierungsbüros führte uns zur Bushaltestelle.

Just having arrived in Myanmar we were told by a border official that there would be no permit for any camping nor any other possibility to spend the night in the next 146 km. That is why we decided to cover the distance by minibus.We were taken to the bus stop by a very nice official of the Registration Office.

Vor der Abfahrt kaufte ich noch eine SIM Karte und besorgte mir an einem Geldautomaten die Landeswährung. Für 190,- € erhielt ich 300.000 Kyat. Das Geldbündel war so dick, dass es nicht mehr in mein Portemonnaie passte.

Before we took off, I bought myself a SIM card and at an ATM I got some 300,000 Kyats of local currency for about 190 €uros. I received such a thick pack of money that it actually didn’t fit into my purse.

Mit dem Bus kamen wir bei einsetzender Dunkelheit in Kalay an. Da wir gehört hatten, dass die Hotels in Myanmar sehr teuer seien, versuchten wir in einem buddhistischen Tempel unter zu kommen. Doch die Mönche bedauerten, dass es ihnen ‚entgegen ihrer Tradition‘ nicht möglich sei uns aufzunehmen. Das Militär erlaube dies nicht.

When the darkness set in we arrived at Kalay. As we had been told that the hotels in Myanmar are most expensive, we tried to find accommodation at a Buddist temple. But the monks regretted to inform us that they weren’t able to accommodate us – in contrast to their tradition. They weren’t allowed to do so by the military.

So blieb uns nichts anderes übrig als doch in einem Hotel zu übernachten. Das Hotel war mit 45 US Dollar pro Nacht für uns, echt nicht besonders günstig. Doch es gelang uns den Preis auf 25 US Dollar runter zu handeln. Es war sehr nett von dem Hotelbesitzer, sich darauf einzulassen.

So we had to stay at a hotel after all. At $45 a night, it was not really cheap. But in the end we managed to beat them down to $25. The owner of the hotel was kind enough to go along with our offer.
