Der Umweg: / My Detour:

Einmal war auf meiner Karte eine Straße nicht eingezeichnet und so fuhr ich einen großen Umweg von Myeik aus, Richtung Süden. Schließlich landete ich auf einer noch nicht asphaltierten Straße.

Once I had to make a huge detour from Myeik toward south as one particular road wasn’t marked on my map. Eventually I got to a road which hadn’t even been tarred yet and was in bad condition.

 

Nach anderthalb mühseligen Tagen im Geröll und Schlamm (es hatte auch noch geregnet), erreichte ich eine T-Kreuzung, die auf eine gut ausgebaute Straße mündete. Links ging es weiter in den Süden und rechts sah ich das Schild Myeik (nur) 38km.

After having worked my way through one and a half days of gravel and mud – it had been raining too – I came to a t-crossing which led into a well-built road. On the left hand it went further south, on the right hand it said: Myeik (only) 38 km.

Wenn ich doch diese Straße bloß rechtzeitig gefunden hätte! Diese paar Kilometer auf der gut asphaltierten Straße hätte ich doch locker in nur einem halben Tag geschafft.

If I had only found this road ealier! It would have taken me only half a day on this well tarred road – easy-going!

Frittierte Heuschrecken: /Deep-Fried Grashoppers:

Diese frittierten Heuschrecken kann man sich, in manchen Gegenden im Myanmar, fast an jeder Straßenecke kaufen.

You can buy these deep-fried grashoppers just about anywhere in Myanmar.

Sie sind äußerst billig und nach dem man die Hinterbeine abgerissen hat, sind sie eine erstaunlich gut schmeckende Proteinquelle. Vorausgesetzt man überwindet sich diese Viecher auch zu essen, dass ist mir nicht so leicht gefallen…

They are very cheap indeed, provide you with a lot of protein and after tearing off their hind legs, they are surprisingly tasty. I didn’t find it easy to overcome my disgust at eating them, though.

Merkwürdige Kamine: /Strange chimneys:

Ich habe mich immer gefragt was das für merkwürdige Kamine mitten in der Landschaft sind, bis ich gesehen habe…

…welche Asche dort herumlag. Hier werden anscheinend Tote feuerbestattet, die Asche ist voller Knochenreste.

… the ashes lying about. Apparently the deceased are cremated there, as the ashes are full of bone remains.

Die Bootsfahrt:/My Boat Ride:

Eine Bootsfahrt die ist lustig. Mit diesen altertümlichen Holzbooten werden normale Fährverbindungen bedient.

„A boat trip is fun“, as the Germans say. But they use antiquated wooden boats for the normal ferry service here.

Manchmal gibt es keinen Anlegesteg. Sack und Pack, oder aber auch mal Motorräder, werden über die Reling gehievt und die Passagiere versuchen mit viel Klettergeschick, trockenen Fußes einzusteigen.

There isn’t always a jetty. So they heave all the stuff, at times even motorbikes, over the railing and the passengers try to scramble into the boat with great skill, trying not to get their feet wet.

Die Holzboote werden durch einen, wie ein Mixer aussehenden Propellerstab angetrieben. Der Motor davon, ist sehr laut und verliert soviel Öl, dass der ganze Bootsinnenraum unter dem Motor schwarz gefärbt ist.

These boats are driven by some kind of a propellor stick which looks like a rotary mixer. The engine is very noisy and it keeps losing so much oil that the entire interior of the boat underneath the motor is black.
