Atacama Region – 13.07.18

Während meines Trips quer durch die Atacama Wüste veränderte sich die Landschaft nochmals. Wo bislang noch Kakteen gewachsen waren, wuchs jetzt gar nichts mehr. Alles ist nur staubtrocken. Es ist zwar ordentlich bergig, aber zum Glück ist die Straße durchgehend asphaltiert und mit großzügigen Seitenstreifen versehen. Auch die Verkehrsteilnehmer fuhren mit respektvollem Abstand an mir vorbei. Das ist nicht in jedem Land so.

The landscape changed again while I was traveling across the Atacama desert. Had I seen cactuses before, now, there was no vegetation at all. Dust-dry everywhere. The road was quite hilly but it was tarred right through and there were spacious side strips next to it. The other drivers kept the proper distance as well. It’s not like that in every country.

Auf diese Weise kam ich sicher und schnell voran und erreichte jeweils nach nur wenigen Wüstenübernachtungen, alle paar Tage eine Stadt in der ich meine Vorräte wieder auffüllen konnte.

This way I got on quite safe and fast and after only a few nights in the desert, I reached a new town where I could fill up my stocks, every few days.

Der Vorteil beim Campen in einer Wüste ist, dass man genug Platz hat um sich die schönste Stelle auszusuchen und dabei garantiert seine Ruhe hat.

The advantage of camping in a desert is that you have ample room and you can choose the best place to stay over where you definitely have peace and quiet.

Direkt von meinem Zelt aus, genoß ich die wunderschönen Sonnenuntergänge./ From outside my tent I enjoyed the most beautiful sunsets.

Wenn es dann stockdunkel ist kann man in der Wüste, abseits jeder Zivilisation ohne jegliche störenden Lichter, wunderbar den wolkenlosen und sternenklaren Himmel betrachten. Mein Zeltplatz war also eine richtige 1000 *Sterne-Unterkunft*.

As soon as the night gets pitch black, you can see the stars in the cloudless sky, no civilization around, therefore no lights interfering with the view. My camping site proved to be a „1000 star accommodation“.

Hier im Norden von Chile liegt der Grund für Chiles relativen Wohlstand, der Bergbau. Es gibt hier die größten Kupferminen. Dafür werden unvorstellbar große Löcher in den Boden gegraben. Dabei kommen gigantische Maschinen zum Einsatz. Riesige Teile dieser Monstermaschinen sah ich unterwegs immer mal wieder, da sie ab und zu per Schwerttransporter über die Straßen transportiert werden.

Here in the north of Chile, there is relative prosperity due to the mining industry. The largest copper mines are here. Immense holes are driven into the ground. Gigantic machines are used for this job. I happened to see quite a few of the gigantic parts of these monster machines on my way as they get transported on the roads by heavy-load transporters every so often.

Nach einigen Tagen erreichte ich Caldera, eine Hafenstadt. Dort erkundete ich zu allererst den Strand, denn es war schön nach all den Tagen in trockenster Landschaft noch mal das Meer zu sehen. Leider war es aber zum Baden zu kalt.

Some days later I arrived at Caldera, a harbor town. I first headed to the beach because I felt like seeing the sea again after so many days in terribly dry landscapes. It was too cold for a bath, though.

Ich fuhr nun für eine Weile weiter an der Küste entlang, bis zu einem Nationalpark bei Chañaral./ Then I followed the coastal road up to a national park at Chañaral.

Dort wurde die Küste noch einmal richtig beeindruckend./ I was very impressed by the coast over there.

Von hier aus ging es wieder steil den Berg hoch, zurück zur Hauptstraße Routa 5./ The road went up the mountain very steeply toward the main road called Routa 5.

Aber schon der nächste Tag bescherte mir einen Umweg. Ich mußte zurück zur Küste nach Taltal, um Vorräte einzukaufen. Nachdem ich mich für die nächsten Tage eingedeckt hatte, fuhr ich noch einige Kilometer an der Küste bis zum allerletzten kleinen Ort, Paposo. Nach diesem Dorf gibt es für eine Strecke von über 150 Kilometern keine Siedlung mehr.

Alas, I had to make a detour the next day. I had to go back all the way to the coast to Taltal in order to do some food shopping. Having bought enough for the coming days, I followed the road for a few kilometers to the very last small village, named Paposo. There is no settlement after this place for the next 150 kilometers.

Außerdem steigt ab dieser Stelle die Straße von 0 auf 2000 m.ü.M. In der Nähe des Ortes fand ich versteckt zwischen Kakteen, einen guten Platz zum zelten.

From there the road climbs from 0 to 2000 meters above sea level. I found a good place to pitch my tent between cactuses near this village.

Nachdem ich dort eine erholsame Nacht verbracht hatte, begab ich mich am nächsten Tag ausgeruht daran, die nun vor mir liegende extreme Steigung zu bewältigen./ Having spent a relaxing night there, I was refreshed and started off to conquer the extreme gradient the next day.
