Clearwater – 01.09.2019

Planmäßig landete ich in Kanada. Schon bei der Ankunft wurde mir klar, dass ich von nun an in einem erste Welt Land bin. Selbst der Sicherheitsbereich war sehr schön und luxuriös eingerichtet, kein Vergleich mit dem Flughafen in Mexiko-Stadt.

I arrived in Canada on schedule. I noticed straight away that from now on I’m in a first world country. Even the security area was luxurious and beautiful, it doesn’t compare to Mexico City airport in the least.

Bei der Emigration war ich etwas nervös, den ich wusste nicht genau, welche Unterlagen für die Einreise mit dem „Work and Travel“ Visum genau gefordert werden. Von der ersten Migrationsstelle wurde ich zum Kofferband und danach zu einer zweiten Migrationsstelle geschickt. Dort warteten schon etliche Leute und ich bekam mit, dass bei manchen das Gespräch, gelinde gesagt, etwas problematisch verlief. Zu einem der Reisenden sagte der Beamten: „Ist das all ihr Geld? Das ist ja gar nichts!“ Als ich schließlich an der Reihe war, bekam ich entgegen meiner Befürchtung sehr einfach eine Arbeitserlaubnis. Man stellte mir dazu nicht eine einzige Rückfrage.

Emigration made me nervous as I wasn’t really sure which documents were required for my „work and travel“ visa. The first immigration desk sent me to the suitcase conveyor and to another immigration desk after that. A few people were waiting in line there and I learned that some of the had a rather difficult talk to put it mildly. One of them was asked whether this was all his money and that the amount was really nothing. When it was my turn, I got my permit easily, though. They never asked me a thing.

Erleichtert schob ich meinen riesigen Fahrradkarton und mein Gepäck aus dem Flughafen heraus und baute es zusammen. /  I was so relieved and pushed my huge bicycle cardboard and my luggage out of the airport where I assembled it.

Dank Birgit, einer Freundin von meiner Mutter, die Kontakte nach Vancouver hat,  konnte ich die ersten Tage bei einem ihrer Bekannten übernachten. Vom Flughafen aus fuhr ich nun direkt zu ihm. /  Thanks to Birgit who is one of my mother’s friends with contacts into Vancouver, I was able to stay with one of her friends for 3 days. I went there straight away.

Die Straßen sind ganz anders als in Mexiko, recht leer und ganz ohne Motorräder, es gibt nur Autos. Der Seitenstreifen ist meist sehr breit und überall gibt es Fahrradwege. / Roads are very different to those in Mexico, rather empty and no motorbikes anywhere, only cars. Hard shoulders are wide and there are a lot of cycle tracks everywhere.

Allerdings sind die Radwege ziemlich verwirrend angelegt und so fuhr ich mehrfach falsch. Schließlich erreichte ich die Wohnung von Fraser, bei dem ich die nächsten Tage kostenlos wohnen kann. / They have been set up rather confusingly, so I got it wrong several times. Finally I came to Frazer’s place where I stayed for three days for free.

Die Preise in Kanada sind generell hoch. Zunächst musste ich mich erstmal daran gewöhnen. Um die hohen Lebenshaltungskosten aufbringen zu können war mein Plan zunächst in Vancouver zu arbeiten und erst im nächsten Frühjahr von hier aus nach Toronto (von der Pazifikküste bis zur Atlantikküste) mit dem Fahrrad zu fahren.

Generally, prices in Canada are high. I had to get used to that first. I was planning to work in Vancouver in order to be able to afford living there and ride toward Toronto the following spring (from the Pacific ocean to the Atlantic ocean).

Ich stellte aber fest, dass die Preise um eine Unterkunft zu mieten, extrem hoch sind. Der geringe Mindestlohn, den man hier als Backpacker bekommt, würde deshalb kaum ausreichen um die Lebenshaltungskosten zu decken. Ganz abgesehen davon, wäre es so kaum möglich Geld für meine weitere Reise zu sparen. Kurz entschlossen beschloss ich Vancouver zu verlassen.

Unfortunately I had to learn that prices for a place to stay are extremely high. As a backpacker you only earn very little money, so this would never have been enough to make a living. Apart from that i wouldn’t be able to save any money to go on traveling. So I decided to leave Vancouver without further ado.

Nun ist es aber bereits sehr spät im Jahr und um von hier aus mit dem Rad bis an die Atlantikküste zu reisen, dauert es mindestens vier Monate. Ich würde also in den Winter kommen. Das möchte ich aber auf keinen Fall, denn das würde nicht nur verdammt kalt, sondern kann auch gefährlich werden.

Now it’s rather late in the year and it takes at least four months to ride a bike to the Atlantic coast from here. I would have to travel in winter which is extremely cold and extremely dangerous. No way!

Darüber dachte ich nach und entdeckte bei meiner Recherche, dass es eine Zug Linie von Vancouver bis nach Toronto gibt. Da ich allerdings so viel mit dem Fahrrad fahren möchte wie möglich, fand ich heraus dass ich bis zur 800 km entfernten Haltestelle in Jasper durchaus mit dem Fahrrad fahren …

When I thought about that I found out that there is a train from Vancouver to Toronto. I want to ride on my bike as much as possible, so I learned that I was able to go to the station in Jasper which is about 800 kilometers away by bike …

… und erst dann auf den Zug umsteigen kann./ … and there get on the train.

Diese Alternative überzeugte mich. Auch die Fahrradmitnahme im Zug, wird kein Problem sein./ This looked like a very good alternative to me. There won’t be a problem taking my bike with me on the train.

In den nächsten Tagen bereitete ich mich auf meine Fahrt durch die Rocky Mountains bis nach Jasper vor. Es soll dort auch viele Bären geben. / In the days to come I prepared my ride through the Rocky Mountains to Jasper. Bears are supposed to live there.

Ich möchte darauf gewappnet sein und kaufte in einem Laden ein Presslufthorn, das bei seiner Aktivierung ein extrem lautes Geräusch erzeugt und einen Bären hoffentlich in die Flucht schlägt. / I want to be prepared and bought myself a pneumatic siren which produces an extremely loud noise when activated, hopefully frightening the bears off.

Außerdem kaufte ich Lebensmittel und eine Gaskartusche, denn unterwegs werde ich mich selbst versorgen./ I also bought some groceries and a gas cartridge as I will provide for myself on the way.

Der Versuch meine Isomatte, die immer noch defekt ist umzutauschen, scheiterte da kein Laden bereit war sie zu reklamieren und sie zur Herstellerfirma zu schicken./ I didn’t manage to swap my sleeping mat which is still broken as no-one was prepared to take it and send it back to the manufacturer.

Noch einen Tag Kraft sammeln, dann ging es los Richtung Kanadas Wildnis.  / One day of gathering strength and then off toward Canada’s wilderness.

Von nun an zeltete ich ausschließlich. Meist fand ich einen ruhigen Ort neben Feldern.  / From then on I only slept in my tent. I usually found a quiet place next to some fields.

Auch fragte ich Privatpersonen ob ich auf ihrem Grundstück zelten dürfte.  / I sometimes asked people for permission to put up my tent on their property.

Auf meinem Weg sah ich in den Flüssen große Holzflöße. Die gefällten Baumstämme werden ins Wasser geschmissen und einfach bis zum nächsten Sägewerk treiben gelassen. Das ist ein sehr effizienter Weg um das Holz zu transportieren, ganz ohne Straßen.

On my way I spotted big wooden rafts. The felled tree trunks are thrown into the river and kind of driven to the nearest sawmill. This is a very efficient way of transporting it, no roads needed.

In einem Supermarkt, in dem ich meine Vorräte aufstockte fiel mir mein Handy auf den Boden. Es war schon vorher defekt, aber von nun an ging gar nichts mehr. Für die Navigation, aber auch mit meiner Familie und meiner Freundin in Kontakt zu bleibe,  bin ich auf mein Handy absolut angewiesen. Zum Glück war direkt neben dem Supermarkt ein Geschäft für Büromaterial. Dort konnte ich mir direkt ein neues Handy kaufen.

I bought some groceries at a supermarket when my mobile phone dropped on the floor. It had been defective before but then – dead. I definitely need my mobile in order to find my way but also to stay in contact with my family and my girlfriend. Fortunately there was an office supply store next to the supermarket. I bought myself a new mobile phone there.

Zuvor hatte ich mir bereits In Vancouver  eine kanadische SIM-Karte gekauft. Mobiles Internet ist hier extrem teuer. Auch Prepaid-Karten sind hier eher nicht so verbreitet, deshalb riet man mir ein monatlich kündbaren Vertrag abzuschließen, der wäre günstiger. Nachdem ich unterschreiben hatte, legte man mir ein Informationsblatt vor. Dort entdeckte ich den Vermerk, dass ich zusätzlich eine $35 teure Gebühr bezahlen sollte. Auf meine Nachfrage sagte man mir, dass diese Gebühr nicht berechnet werden würde.

 I had bought a Canadian SIM-card beforehand in Vancouver. Mobile Internet is extremely expensive there. Prepaid cards are not really in use over there. So I was told to make a contract cancellable on a monthly basis because this was supposed to be cheaper. After having signed I got a handout which said that I would have to pay an extra fee of $35. At my request they told me I would not have to pay at all.

Eine Woche später bekam ich meine erste Rechnung und entdeckte, dass man mir diese Gebühr doch berechnet hatte, umgerechnet 63 € kostet mich so ein Monat Internet. Ganz schön happig. Natürlich beschwerte ich mich per Hotline, aber das Geld wollte man mir nicht erstatten. Da hat man mich wohl ziemlich gelinkt.

A week later I had my first bill and found out that they had indeed charged me that fee, so one month on the Internet was $63. Pretty costly that! Of course I complained at the hotline. But they wouldn’t give my money back. I had been screwed.

Ich fuhr weiter und fragte bei einem Haus nach ob ich auf dem Grundstück zelten dürfte. Das war kein Problem./ I traveled on and asked at a house if I would be allowed to put up my tent there. No problem.

Das ältere Paar zeigte mir außerdem das Haus in dem sie wohnten. Alles war voller Solaranlagen und Batteriespeicher, auch einen batteriebetriebenen Tesla hatten sie.

The elderly couple showed my round their house. Solar panels and battery storage everywhere. They even owned a battery-powered Tesla.

Sehr interessant für mich als Elektriker. Ich fühlte mich hier sehr wohl und blieb zwei Nächte. /This was very interesting for me, being an electrician.I liked it there a lot and stayed for two nights.

Sie nahmen mich mit auf eine  Sightseeing Fahrt in die Stadt Clearwater. / They took me to a sightseeing tour into the town of Clearwater.

Auf unserem Ausflug machten wir einen Stop an einem Fluss. Hier sahen wir einen Schwarm von Lachsen,  die zum Laichen jedes Jahr im Spätsommer den ganzen weiten Weg vom Ozean bis hierhin schwimmen.

They took me to a sightseeing tour into the town of Clearwater. On our trip we stopped on a river. There was a whole shoal of salmon which are known to come all the way from the ocean in order to spawn here.

Am Morgen meiner Weiterfahrt unterschrieben meine Gastgeber meine gelbe Tasche und sie gaben mir noch zahlreiches Snacks mit auf dem Weg. Vielen Dank dafür! / My hosts signed my yellow bag and gave me several snacks to take with me when I left that morning. Thanks a lot for that!
