Zu den Kühen pflegen die Hindus in Indien ein ausgeprägt inniges Verhältnis. Man sieht Bauern die ihre Kuh im Dorfteich baden und per Bürste massieren. Im selben Teich, waschen sich zeitgleich andere Dorfbewohner.

Hindus in India are very fond of their cows, indeed. You can watch farmers who bathe their cows in the village pond, rubbing their skin with a brush. At the same time, other villagers take their bath in the same pond.

Die Kühe werden nicht geschlachtet und geben auch nur max. 6 Liter Milch pro Tag. Auf dem warmen Asphalt in der Mitte der Hauptstraße scheinen sich die Kühe besonders wohl zu fühlen.

These cows don’t get slaughtered and they don’t give more than 6 l of milk per day. They seem to prefer staying on the warm tar in the middle of the main road.

Alle Verkehrsteilnehmer drosseln ihr Tempo und fahren vorsichtig um die Kuh, herum. Niemand hupt.

One day I saw a deceased cow being transported on a bike.

Einmal sah ich sogar wie eine verstorbene Kuh mit dem Fahrrad abtransportiert worden ist.

Im Gegensatz zu den Kühen werde ich als Radfahrer nicht so rücksichtsvoll behandelt. Wenn jemand von hinten oder vorne kommend meinen Platz zum überholen benötigt, werde ich durch Hupen in der letzten Sekunde gewarnt. Mir bleibt gerade noch genügend Zeit um in den unbefestigten Graben zu fahren. Mehrfach habe ich sehr knappe Situationen überlebt.

One day I saw a deceased cow being transported on a bike. As a biker, I’m not so lucky to be treated as thoughtfully as the cows. I get warned by hooting at the very last second whenever someone coming towards me or after me, needs my space to overtake me. Then I just have time to get out of the way and into the unsurfaced ditch. More than once I just about survived.

In case they ever get driverless cars over there, they will have to change the software for the Indian cars. If the algorithm has the choice of either to run over a cow or a cyclist, it will have to be programmed in favor of the cow…

Sollten also in Indien einmal selbstfahrende Autos unterwegs sein, dann muss wohl die Software der indischen Autos abgeändert werden. Wenn der Algorithmus also die Wahl hat, einen Fahrradfahrer oder doch eine Kuh zu überfahren, muss er zu Gunsten der Kuh umprogrammiert werden…
