Von Aldrin meinem Warm-Shower Freund bekam ich den Hinweis, dass die weitere Fahrt nach Jakarta über den Osten von Sumatra nicht sicher ist. Vor Jahren wurde in dieser Gegend wohl mal ein Fahrradreisender ausgeraubt. Auch die Straße und die Landschaft soll dort alles andere als schön sein.

My friend Aldrin told me that the way to Jakarta via the east of Sumatra isn’t safe at all. Years ago a cyclist had been robbed there. The road and the landscape are said to be not very nice, either.

Also reservierte mein Freund mir auch gleich ein Busticket für die übernächste Nacht, um in den wohl viel schöneren Westen Sumatras zu gelangen.

So, my friend got me a bus ticket for the night after the next in order to get to the west of Sumatra which is supposedly much nicer.

That evening I was invited for dinner by my friend’s big bicycle association „Lotus“. We decided to make a trip together the next morning, prior to my bus trip, with the whole lot of about 50 people. We wanted to visit a Buddhist temple nearby.

Am Abend wurde ich von dem großen Fahrradclub ‚Lotus‘ meines Freundes zum Essen eingeladen. Für den nächsten Morgen, noch bevor meine Busfahrt anstand verabredeten wir, dass ich mit dem gesamten Fahrradverein ‚also mit locker 50 Leuten‘, einen Ausflug mache. Es sollte zu einem nahen buddhistischen Tempel gehen.

Der Ausflug am nächsten Tag war auch wirklich sehr schön. Es machte Spaß mit den ganzen anderen Fahrradverrückten die Gegend zu erkunden. Ich bekam alles erklärt und wurde herum geführt.

The trip was very nice, indeed. It was fun to explore the area together with all the other crazy bike fans. Everything was explained to me and I was taken around.

The ruins of this old temple, originating from the times of the Buddhist Indonesia, were very impressive.

Die alten Tempelruinen, die aus der Zeit stammten, in der Indonesien noch buddhistisch war, waren beeindruckend.

Einer der Mitfahrer vom Fahrradverein hatte Geburtstag und lud uns anschließend alle zu Kaffee und Kuchen ein.

One of the cyclists wanted to celebrate his birthday and invited us for coffee and cake.

Viel Zeit hatte ich aber leider nicht. Denn ich musste noch vor der Busabfahrt, die Festplatte meines alten Computers abholen. Doch leider hat es in der Kürze der Zeit mit der Datensicherung nicht geklappt. Aber der Computerfachmann hatte die Festplatte ausgebaut und gab sie mir mit. Für diesen Aufwand musste ich wieder nichts bezahlen.

I didn’t have much time, though. Before the departure of my bus I had to collect the hard drive of my old computer. Unfortunately the expert hadn’t succeeded in saving my data in such a short time. Anyway, he had removed the hard drive and gave it to me. I didn’t have to pay anything.

Auch die Busfahrt an die Westküste, die vom frühen Abend bis zum nächsten Morgen dauerte bekam ich geschenkt, da der Busunternehmer ein Freund von Aldrin war. Unglaublich ! So langsam wurde mir klar, dass alles was hier passiert über Beziehungen läuft. Ohne Beziehungen kann man wahrscheinlich gar nicht von diesem ortsüblichen, kargen Lohn überleben.

Even the ride to the west coast was a present as the busdriver was a friend of Aldrin’s. It takes from early evening to the following morning. It was unvelievable! Slowly, it became clear to me that everything here is about contacts. If you don’t have these contacts, you probably won’t be able to survive on the meagre wages you get in this country.
