Merida – 19.07.2019

Nach einer 21 Stunden langen Busfahrt kam ich ziemlich gerädert in Cancun an. / After a 21 hours‘ bus ride I got to Cancun, rather exhausted.

Zunächst  holte ich mein Fahrrad in dem Fahrradladen ab, wo ich es netterweise zwischenzeitlich kostenlos untergestellt hatte. Was habe ich doch mein Fahrrad vermisst. Einen Monat ohne mein Fahrrad ist eine lange Zeit. Ich freue mich schon bald wieder auf das Rad zu steigen und losfahren zu können.

First I went to get my bike from the bycicle shop. They had kindly allowed me to leave it there free of charge. I had missed it so much! One month without my bike is a very long time, indeed. I am so much looking forward to riding on again.

Mein Plan ist es, von Cancun aus die mehr als 1600 km bis nach Mexiko Stadt zu fahren. Von da aus werde ich nach Kanada fliegen müssen, da mir- für mich noch immer völlig unverständlich- ohne Angaben von Gründen, kein USA Visum gewährt worden ist. Ich habe mir überlegt, dass ich nach Vancouver ganz im Westen von Kanada möchte. Ich buchte ein Flugticket nach Kanada, bereitete mein Fahrrad und die Ausrüstung vor und fuhr dann los durch Mexikos Süden. Zunächst ging es für mich Richtung Valladolid und Merida, wo ich ja bereits schon gewesen bin. 

I plan to go to Mexico town which is more than 1.600 kilometers away from Cancun. From there I will have to take a plane to Canada as they didn’t grant me a visa for the USA. I don’t know why, nobody told me. I thought about going to Vancouver in the west of Canada. I booked a flight ticket to Canada, prepared my bike and my equipment for the trip and then started toward the south of Mexico. First I went in the direction of Valladolid and Merida which I had visited before.

Auf halber Strecke nach Valladolid gibt es laut meiner IOverlander App, eine unterirdische Cenote die zwar recht viel Eintritt kostet, aber das Geld wert sein soll. / Halfway to Valladolid, according to my Overland App, there is an underground cenote which is expensive as far as the entry fee is concerned, but it is supposed to be worthwhile.

Es ist hier tagsüber extrem heiß und  kaum auszuhalten. Deswegen fiel mir diese Entscheidung nicht schwer. Ich fuhr zur Cenote. Es sollte sich lohnen. Die Cenote lag in einer Höhle, in der man zwischen Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten herum schwimmen kann. Erleuchtet wurde sie einzig und allein von einigen Lampen.

In the day it is extremely hot here and I can hardly bear it. So the decision wasn’t difficult to take. I did go to the cenote. It was really worth it. It was situated in a cave, and you were swimming among stalactites and stalagmites. There were only a few lamps for lighting.

Plötzlich fiel der Strom aus. Kurze Zeit war man komplett orientierungslos, bis das Licht nach einigen Sekunden wieder anging. Das Bad in der Cenote war wirklich sehr erfrischend. Doch leider hielt diese Abkühlung, angesichts der Hitze nicht lange vor.

Suddenly there was no power. For a short time I was completely disoriented until the lights went on again. It was refreshing in the cenote but this didn’t last long due to the heat.

Schon bald war ich wieder so verschwitzt wie zuvor. Dann entdeckte ich zu meiner großen Freude einen Eisstand. / I was as hot and sweaty as before when I spotted an icecream place.

Erst wäre ich fast daran vorbei gefahren. Einen derart provisorischen Stand habe ich noch nie gesehen. Aus ineinander gestapelten Plastiktonnen mit einer dazwischenliegenden Isolierung wurde Eis verkauft. Ich machte eine Pause. Das Eis war echt nicht schlecht. Kostenlos reichte man mir sogar kaltes Wasser dazu. 

I nearly missed it because it was so makeshift, I hadn’t seen anything like it before. They had stacked some plastic boxes and insulated them inside. From there they sold the icecream. I took a rest. The icecream wasn’t bad at all. They even gave me some cold water for free.

In Valladolid machte ich eine erste, mehrtägige Pause. Die Hitze schlaucht schon sehr. Mit einigen anderen Reisenden ging ich zur Cenote die direkt in der Stadt liegt. Von oben aus kann man von einer … Meter hohen Plattform ins Wasser springen.

My first rest of a few days was at Valladolid. The heat is murderous. I went to the cenote which is in the middle of the town with some of the other travelers. There is a high platform from which you can jump into the water.

Von Valladolid nach Merida brauchte ich zwei Tage. Eine Nacht zeltete ich im Wald. / It took me two days to get to Merida from Valladolid. One night, I put up my tent in the forest.

Allerdings ist seit einigen Wochen – zum 2. Mal auf meiner Reise – meine selbstaufblasbare Luftmatratze defekt. Der Füllschaum hat sich von der Ummantelung getrennt und so schlafe ich auf einer riesigen Blase. Nicht gerade komfortabel. Diese Matten haben zwar eine lebenslange Garantie und man kann sie immer wieder umtauschen, aber wenn man auf Tour ist hilft das auch nicht viel. 

Alas, my self-inflating air mattress is defective and it is for the second time on my journey. The filling foam has separated from the cover and so I sleep on a huge bubble. Not really comfortable. Of course these mats obtain a guaranty for life and you can swap them again and again but what good is that for when you are on tour?

Jemandem der eine lange Tour über Monate und Jahre macht, kann ich nur abraten sich so eine selbstaufblasende Matte zu kaufen. / I can’t advise anybody who wants to travel for a long time, not to buy such a mat. You’d better not!

In Merida blieb ich drei Nächte und übernachtete dabei bei einem Warmshower Kontakt. Dieser hieß mich gleich sehr willkommen. / I stayed in Merida for three nights and slept at a warmshower place. The guy made me feel welcome at once.

Er zeigte mir die Stadt und ich durfte in seinem luxuriösen Haus übernachten. Ich hatte sogar ein großes komfortables Bett. Was war das für ein Unterschied zu meiner defekten selbstaufblasenden Matte. / He showed me the town and I was allowed to stay overnight in his luxurious house. I had a big comfortable bed to myself. Quite a difference to my defective self-inflating mattress.
