Toronto – 18.09.2019

Für die weite Zugfahrt (72h) quer durch Kanada (Jasper bis Toronto) hatte ich die deutlich günstigere Economy Klasse gebucht.

I had booked a place in the economy class for the long ride of 72 hours right across Canada, from Jasper to Toronto.

Deswegen gab es für mich unterwegs kein kostenloses Essen, sowie nur einen Sitzplatz und kein Bett. / That’s why I never got any food for free on the way and no bed but only a seat.

Die meiste Zeit hatte ich allerdings keinen Sitznachbar und somit zwei Sitzplätze zur Verfügung . Das machte das Schlafen etwas einfacher. / Most of the time there wasn’t anyone sitting next to me so I was able to use two seats for myself which made sleeping much easier.

Im Zug gab es gab auch einen Panoramawagen von dem man eine gute Rundum-Aussicht auf die Landschaft und den kompletten Zug hatte. / The train contained a panorama coach where you had a very good view over the countryside and the entire train.

Wir machten nur selten einen Stopp und wenn, dann war das nicht für  lange. / We didn’t stop very often and it was never for any longer period.

Generell verbrachte ich die Zeit meist mit lesen und damit mir die Landschaft anzuschauen. / I spent most of the time reading and looking at the landscape.

Der Zug brauchte auch deswegen so lange, da der Frachtverkehr auf der oft eingleisigen Strecke Vorrang hatte. So mussten wir oft stundenlang auf Frachtzüge warten. Ganz schön nervig. Die Frachtzüge sind hier monströs.

One of the reasons why the trip took so long was that we had to wait for the freight-traffic on the single-track line. So we kept waiting for the freight trains for hours on end. Pretty annoying that. The freight trains are monsters here.

Einmal zählte ich die Wagons durch und kam auf 188 Anhänger, wobei die Container meist sogar doppelt gestapelt waren. Generell war es aber eine schöne Fahrt und ich kam gut, aber etwas gestresst in Toronto an. / I counted 188 waggons once, containers even being doubled stacked. Generally speaking, it was a nice trip and I reached Toronto in a good mood, though a little stressed.

Über Warmshower hatte ich bereits vorab versucht eine Übernachtungsmöglichkeit zu finden. Allerdings bekam ich erst so spät eine positive Mitteilung , dass ich bereits die erste Nacht in einem Airbnb gebucht hatte. Es war schrecklich teuer, eine Nacht kostete 35 €. Das war das Günstigste was ich gefunden hatte. Die Unterkunft lag zudem noch weit außerhalb des Stadtkerns und das Zimmer hatte noch nicht mal ein Fenster. Nach einer Nacht in meinem Airbnb fuhr ich dann zu einer Warmshowerunterkunft, in der ich für 4 Nächte bleiben durfte. Das hat mir sehr weitergeholfen. Ich kann mir hier in Toronto  einfach kein Hostel oder eine Unterkunft für einen langen Zeitraum leisten. Vielen Dank Rachel! 

I had tried to get accommodation through warmshowers but I had booked into an Airbnb before as the affirmation arrived too late. It was terribly expensive. One night was 35 €. This had been the cheapest I could find. It was far out of town and the room didn’t even have a window. I left after one night and went to my warmshower accommodation. I was allowed to stay there for four nights. That really helped me along. It is impossible for me to afford a hostel or any other accommodation on a long-time basis. Thank you so much, Rachel!

Über eine Bekannte meiner Freundin aus Nicaragua, bekam ich Kontakt zu ihrem Sohn Tupac, der in Toronto wohnt. / My girlfriend in Nicaragua has a friend whose son Tupac lives in Toronto.

Wir verabredeten uns, und er zeigte mir in einer Stadtrundfahrt mit dem Fahrrad die Sehenswürdigkeiten von Toronto. / We arranged to meet and he showed me Toronto’s attractions on our bikes.

Ich habe außerdem Pläne schon nächste Woche von Toronto, noch einmal  bis nach Nicaragua zu fliegen, um meine Freundin zu besuchen. Von Toronto aus, ist das nicht so teuer. Für die Zeit, in der ich in Nicaragua sein werde, erklärte sich Tupac bereit, dass ich mein Fahrrad bei ihm abstellen darf.

I’m planning to leave Toronto next week in order to fly to Nicaragua and visit my girlfriend. It isn’t so expensive from Toronto. Tupac agreed to keep my bike as long as I would be away to Nicaragua.

Nachdem ich vier Nächten in Toronto war, wollte ich eigentlich direkt einen Ausflug per Fahrrad zu den bekannten Niagara Wasserfällen unternehmen. Allerdings regnete es am Tag meiner geplanten Abfahrt so sehr, dass ich beschloss noch eine weitere Nacht in einem Hostel in Toronto zu verbringen.

Having stayed at Toronto for four nights I planned to go to the famous Niagara Falls by bike. It was raining cats and dogs the day I wanted to leave, so I decided to stay for one more night at a hostel in Toronto.

Am nächsten Morgen sah das Wetter schon deutlich besser aus. Ich fuhr los, immer am Niagara See entlang. Die Landschaft war sehr schön. / The next morning the weather looked much more promising. I started along the Lake of Niagara. The landscape was gorgeous.

Es wurde etwas ländlicher, viel Obst und Weintrauben werden hier angebaut. Nach einem langen und anstrengenden Radfahrtag fragte ich gegen Abend einen Anwohner um Erlaubnis und zelte schließlich auf seinem Grundstück. Kaum hatte ich mein Zelt aufgebaut, da hörte ich ziemlich nah andauernd Schüsse. Das machte mir Sorgen und ich dachte, dass es sich um eine Jagd handeln musste. Wenig später kam der Besitzer des Grundstücks auf mich zu und bot mir netterweise an, dass ich in seinem Haus duschen und kochen könnte.

The country became more rural, there were lots of orchards and vineyards. After a long and strenuous day I asked a person for permission to put up my tent on his premises. I had only just done so when I heard shooting nearby. I was a bit scared and thought it might be a hunt. A little later the owner of the place approached me and told me that I was allowed to have a shower in his house and also do my cooking there.

Das andauernde Knallen schien ihm nicht im Geringsten aus der Ruhe zu bringen. Also fragte ich nach und er erklärte mir, dass das Geräusch von einem nahen Weinfeld kommt. Es wird erzeugt um Vögel von den reifen Trauben fernzuhalten! Mit so einer Erklärung hätte ich gar nicht gerechnet! 

He didn’t seem to worry about the shooting in the least. So I asked about that and learned that it was the noise from a vineyard nearby in order to keep the birds from eating the ripe grapes. I hadn’t expected such an explanation at all!

Am nächsten Morgen brachte mir der Besitzer des Grundstücks netterweise noch ein Frühstück vorbei und ich konnte gestärkt losfahren. / The owner of the place was so kind as to give me some breakfast the following morning and I was able to go on with my trip, saturated.

Schließlich erreichte ich die Niagara Wasserfälle, die ich mir eigentlich noch etwas gigantischer vorgestellt hätte.

Finally I reached the Niagara Falls which I had expected to be even much more gigantic.

Trotzdem beschloss ich eine Fahrt mit einem der teuren Touristen-Boote zu unternehmen, die einen nah an die herunter stürzenden Wassermassen bringen. / Still I decided to undertake a trip on one of the expensive tourist boats which take you close to the cascading waters.

Jetzt beeindruckten mich diese gigantischen Fälle doch schon ganz schön. Ein regelrechter Sturm aus Wassertropfen peitschte mir ins Gesicht. / I was very impressed with the gigantic waterfalls. There was a veritable storm of water drops whipping into my face.

Um nicht ganz so nass zu werden, wurde an jeden ein Regencap verteilt, was definitiv auch nötig war. / Everyone got a raincape which prevented us from getting sopping wet. This was definitely a must-have.

Nach diesem Bootsausflug ging es für mich wieder auf das Fahrrad. / After the boat trip I returned to my bike.

Ich folgte nun dem Niagara Fluss, der übrigens auch die Grenze zu den USA darstellt. Zurück ging es zum Niagara See, dessen Ufer mich wieder nach Toronto führen werden. Gegen Abend zeltete ich versteckt in einem Park.

I followed the river of Niagara which is the border to the USA at the same time. From there I went back to the Lake Niagara in order to get back to Toronto again, following the banks of the river. That evening I put up my tent, hidden in a park.

Morgen Abend steht auch der Flug nach Nicaragua an und ich beeilte mich am nächsten Morgen zurück nach Toronto zu kommen, mein Koffer zu packen und mein Fahrrad bei Tupac abzustellen. Ich freue mich schon auf Nicaragua!

Tomorrow evening I’m taking the flight to Nicaragua and so I hastened to get to Toronto that morning, to get my luggage packed and to stow my bike at Tupac’s place. I’m looking forward to Nicaragua!
