Von Ometepe fuhr ich also morgens los nach San Juan del Sur. Allerdings hatte ich ein paar Startprobleme. Kurz vor meiner geplanten Weiterfahrt entdeckte ich, dass der Hinterreifen platt war. Nachdem ich ihn geflickt hatte wollte ich mit Hilfe eines Schraubendrehers meines Taschenmessers, die Kette nachspannen. Denn die Kette saß im Moment viel zu locker und rutschte dauernd vom Ritzel. Prompt brach dabei mein Taschenmesser ab und mein Vorhaben die Kette nachzuspannen, konnte ich nun vergessen.

I left Ometepe in the direction of San Juan del Sur early in the morning. I had a few starting problems, though. Just before I wanted to travel on, I found out that I had a flat rear wheel. That fixed, I wanted to tighten the chain by aid of a screwdriver on my pocket knife. The chain was way too loose and kept sliding off the sprocket. Promptly, my knife broke and I had to forget about the action of tightening the chain.

So kam ich erst spät los. Auch die Überfahrt mit dem Boot kostete viel Zeit. Dann kam ich aber doch noch recht zügig voran, obwohl ich unterwegs mehrfach die Kette zurück auf das Ritzel heben musste.

So I wasn’t able to leave early. The crossing by boat also took a lot of time. Afterward I got on quite nicely although I had to put the chain back onto the sprocket every so often on my way.

In San Juan del Sur angekommen blieb ich dort für zwei Tage. / At San Juan del Sur I stayed for two days.

Es ist eine ziemlich touristische Stadt, die bekannt für ihre Partys ist. Jetzt unter der Woche war sie aber wie ausgestorben. Das einzige Sehenswerte ist der Sandstrand. / The town is rather touristic and known for parties and such. Now, in the middle of the week, it was like deserted. The only attraction there is the sandy beach.

Ansonsten gefiel mir dieser Ort jedoch nicht so sehr. Ich verabschiedete mich von Johannes und Anna, die nun bald nach Deutschland zurückfliegen. / Apart from that I didn’t like the place very much. I said goodbye to Johannes and Anna who were soon to go back to Germany.

Für mich ging es weiter ins 120 km entfernte Grenada, eine Stadt die bekannt für ihre historische Altstadt ist. Dank starken Rückenwinds ereichte ich Grenada schnell. Hier blieb ich ebenfalls 2 Nächte. Besonders in Erinnerung bleibt mir ein Sonnenuntergang über den Dächern der Stadt, den ich von einem Kirchturm aus sah.

I traveled on toward Grenada which is a town known for its historical center, about 120 km away. Thanks to strong rear winds I got there quickly. Again I stayed over for 2 nights. From a church steeple I watched a beautiful sunset which I think will make a lasting memory.

Von Grenada wollte ich eigentlich direkt nach Leon fahren. Da die Entfernung aber für einen Tag viel zu weit ist, entschied ich mich nur bis nach Managua zu fahren.

Actually, I had planned to go from Grenada directly to Leon. For one single day, though, the distance is too far, so I decided to go only to Managua.

Managua ist die Hauptstadt von Nicaragua. Wegen der dortigen Sicherheitslage wollte ich sie ursprünglich auf jeden Fall auslassen und möglichst weiträumig umfahren. Ein Vorteil jedoch war, dass ich hier Maury kenne. Sie erklärte sich bereit mir die Stadt zu zeigen und außerdem konnte ich in ihrem Elternhaus übernachten.

Managua is the capital city of Nicaragua. Things aren’t easy there as far as safety is concerned, so I hadn’t wanted to go there at all and I had planned to give it a wide berth. There was one big advantage, though: I know Maury. She was prepared to show me the town and let me sleep over in her parents‘ house.
