Mexiko City – 16.05.2019

Von Celestun aus erreichten wir im weiteren Verlauf unserer Geburtstagsschifffahrt… / Having started at Celestun in the further course of our birthday trip we came to …

… eine glasklare Süßwasserquelle, in der es auch Krokodile geben soll./ … a crystal clear sweet water source where crocodiles are supposed to live.

Da im Moment kein Krokodil zu sehen war, konnten wir in’s Wasser um dort eine Runde zu schwimmen. Das einzige Problem war die Mückenplage. Sobald man aus dem Wasser kam wurde man von zahlreichen Mücken umkreist und gestochen.

There was no crocodile in sight so we were able to jump into the water and take a swim. We were troubled by lots of mosquitos, though. As soon as you got out of the water they circled around you and bit you.

Nach diesem Ausflug wieder an Land angekommen, hielten wir eines der klapprigen Motorradtaxis an. Wir ließen uns zu einer-mitten im Nirgendwo- gelegenen Ruine eines ehemaligen herrschaftlichen Gebäudes bringen.

Back on shore, we stopped one of the rickety motorcycle taxis. We were taken to a ruin in the middle of nowhere which had been a stately building in previous days.

Auf dem Weg dorthin kamen wir an eindrucksvollen rosafarbigen Salinen (Salzgewinnungsbecken) vorbei. Ein gelungener Ausflug und günstig dazu. Der Motorradtaxifahrer wollte umgerechnet nur 10 Euro haben.

On our way there we passed impressive pink saltworks. It was a splendid trip and cheap, too. The motor cyclist only charged us about 10 €.

Von Celestun reisten wir wieder zurück in’s Landesinnere, nach Merida. / We went back to Celestun and from there we traveled on to Merida, up country.

Hier hatten wir online eine Unterkunft über eine Vermittlungsagentur gebucht. Vor Ort mussten wir aber feststellen, dass die Adresse nicht auffindbar ist. Selbst nach 3 Taxifahrten kreuz und quer durch die Stadt, konnten wir das gebuchte Hotel nicht finden. Da wir die Unterkunft schon vorab bezahlt hatten, war das ziemlich ärgerlich. Aber zum Glück bekamen wir nach einer Mail und einem Anruf bei der Vermittlungsagentur, das bereits bezahlte Geld plus eine Entschädigung erstattet.

We had booked our accommodation online and paid in advance at an agency. But on site we had to learn that it was impossible to find the hotel we had booked. Going across the town by taxi three times to and fro, we didn’t find it. This was most annoying. Fortunately after calling them and sending them a mail, we got our money back and compensation on top.

In Merida, der Stadt mit ihren zahlreichen kolonialen Bauten, blieben wir 2 Nächte. / We stayed two nights at Merida, a town with numerous colonial buildings.

Während unseres Aufnthalts gab es auf dem Hauptplatz eine Darbietung der hier ansässigen Indigenas (Nachfolgen der Mayas). Interessant um einen Einblick in deren Kultur zu bekommen. / While we were there the indigenas (successors of the Mayans) had a presentation on the main square. It was interesting to get an idea of their culture.

Leider hatten wir nun nicht mehr viel Zeit. Der Rückflug für meine Eltern von México Stadt nach Deutschland stand in wenigen Tagen an. / Time was running out as my parents had to fly back to Germany from Mexico City a few days later.

Da es von Merida noch sehr weit bis nach Mexiko Stadt ist, hatten wir einen Flug gebucht. So kamen wir auf einem schnellen, dafür nicht ganz umweltfreundlichen Weg nach Mexiko Stadt.   

It is a far way from Merida to Mexico City, so we had booked a flight. That way we got to Mexico City quickly, but not quite so environmentally friendly.

Schon von oben sahen wir die Multimillionen Stadt unter einer Dunstwolke liegen. „Ist das Nebel oder ist etwa Smog?“ / From high above we spotted the cloud of smog where the multi million town lay. „Is this fog or is it really smog?“

Schon bald stellten wir fest, dass es tatsächlich Smog war. Das Atmen fällt schwer und bei jeglicher Bewegung fangen die Lungen beim Luftholen an zu schmerzen. Selbst die internationale Presse berichtet von der Smogsituation in Mexico Stadt. So schlimm war es wohl noch nie. Schuld daran sollen heftige Waldbrände im Umland von Mexiko Stadt sein.

We had to learn that it was really smog. Breathing was hard and your lungs started to hurt with every breath you took. Even the international press informs about the fierce smog situation in Mexico City. It has never been as bad as that. Apparently there were violent wild fires all around Mexico City.

Dennoch versuchten wir uns einige Sehenswürdigkeiten anzusehen. Wir besuchten den Hauptplatz Zocalo im Zentrum. Er ist einer der größten Plätze der Welt. / Still, we tried to visit some of the attractions. We visited the main square Zocalo in the center. It is one of the biggest squares in the world.

Gleich daneben befindet sich das Parlament… / Right next to it is the parliament …

… und die größte Kirche des Landes. / … and the largest church of the country.

Neben der Kirche gelegen, besichtigten wir auch einen ehemals wohl gigantisch großen Aztekentempel. Leider wurde dieser aber von den eintreffenden Spaniern zerstört. Überreste, die einen die enormen Ausmaße erahnen lassen, kann man aber nach wie vor bewundern.

Next to the church we visited an Aztec temple which had once been gigantic. Unfortunately, the Spaniards destroyed it when they arrived. You can still admire the remnants which show you the huge dimensions.

Am Abend fuhren wir mit dem Aufzug zu einer Skybar des Torre Latinoamericana, von der man einen guten Blick auf die Stadt hat. Leider verhinderte der Smog eine sonst sicher noch beeindruckendere Sicht. 

That evening we took an elevator to a sky bar of the Torre Latinoamericana where we expected to have had a very good view all over the city. Unfortunately the smog impeded a view which would have been most impressive.

Am nächsten Tag war es leider Zeit Abschied zu nehmen. Meine Eltern fliegen wieder zurück nach Deutschland und ich begleitete sie noch zum Flughafen.

The following day we had to say goodbye. My parents hat to go back to Germany and I accompanied them to the airport.

Ich selber werde noch ein paar Tage in der Stadt bleiben. Danach werde ich zurück nach Guatemala fliegen um mein Fahrrad dort abzuholen und meine Weltumrundung per Rad fortzusetzen.

I myself will stay in town for a few more days. Afterward I will go back to Guatemala in order to fetch my bike there and go on with my cycling tour around the world.

Meine verbleibende Zeit in Mexiko Stadt versuche ich noch zu nutzen. Das ist aber nicht ganz so einfach. Der Smog ist einfach drückend und es ist nicht gerade gesund vor die Türe zu gehen.

I will try to make good use of my remaining days in Mexico City. It isn’t easy. The smog is pressing and it isn’t really healthy to go out at all.

Trotzdem habe ich einen Ausflug unternommen und den Präsidentenpalast kostenlos besichtigt. Dort gibt es einen schönen Innenhofgarten, Museen über die Geschichte Mexikos und riesige Gemälde des berühmten mexikanischen Künstlers Diego Rivera.

Still I went on a free visit to the presidential palace.There is a beautiful courtyard garden as well as museums of the Mexican history and huge paintings of the Mexican artist Diego Rivera.

Valladolid – 11.05.2019

Wir wären gerne noch länger in Tulum geblieben. Da aber unser dortiges Hostal ausgebucht war fuhren wir per Bus weiter in’s Landesinnere nach Valladolid.

 We really would have wanted to stay longer at Tulum. But as the hostel was fully booked we went on to the interior of the country. We took a bus to Valladolid.

Valladolid ist bekannt für seine umliegenden Cenoten. / Valladolid is well known for its surrounding cenotes.

Zu zwei besonders schönen, unterirdisch gelegenen Cenoten fuhren wir hin. Oberirdisch war es so heiß, dass es kaum auszuhalten war. / We went to see two of the most beautiful subterrestrial cenotes. Aboveground it was almost unbearably hot.

Sobald wir aber durch den unscheinbaren Höhleneingang kamen wurde es schlagartig angenehm kühl. Nach wenigen Metern erreichten wir dann den unterirdischen See./ As soon as we passed the entrance of the cave, unassuming as it was, the temperature dropped immediately and suddenly it got pleasingly cool.

Sogleich waren wir begeistert von dem glasklaren Wasser und den zahlreichen Fischen darin. Von einem kleinen Loch in der Höhlendecke traf ein Lichtstrahl in die Mitte der Cenote. Das gab dem Ganzen etwas Magisches.

Only a few meters after we reached the underground lake. We were so overjoyed by the crystal clear water and the numerous fish in there. There was a small hole in the cave ceiling, a light beam pointing at the center of the cenote. It was really magical.

Von Valladolid aus wollten wir uns auch eine der umliegenden Mayastätten anschauen und fuhren extra aufwendig zu einer hin, nur um dort festzustellen das sich der Eintrittspreis sich seit diesem Jahr verdoppelt hat. Nun kostet er fast 25 Euro pro Person. Soviel Geld wollten wir jedoch nicht dafür ausgeben und so besuchte nur mein Vater die Ruinen.
Meine Mutter und ich gingen zu der etwas günstigeren, nahen Cenote und genossen die Abkühlung.

Starting at Valladolid we planned to view one of the Mayan sites around and when we got there we had to learn that the entry fee had doubled within one year. Now it was almost € 25 per person. We didn’t intend to spend that much money, so only my father went in to visit the ruins.                                                                                               My mother and I went to the cenote nearby which was much more affordable and we enjoyed the cooldown.

Nach diesem nicht ganz so erfolgreichen Tag, besichtigen wir noch das historische Stadtzentrum von Valladolid. Viele koloniale Bauten reihen sich aneinander. / After this day which hadn’t been very successful, we paid a visit to the historic city center of Valladolid. There are many colonial buildings next to each other.

Von Valladolid aus fuhren wir an die Küste vom Golf von Mexiko, nach Celestun. / From Valladolid we went toward the Gulf of Mexico, to Celestun.

Ich hatte Geburtstag und deswegen gönnten wir uns etwas Besonderes. Wir beschlossen eine Bootstour in den hiesigen Nationalpark  zu unternehmen. So stellten wir uns morgens an die Sammelstelle, von der aus die Tour startet. Dort sollten wir warten bis die nötigen 8 Leute zusammen kommen und das Boot ablegen kann. An diesem Tag herrschte aber ‚Tote Hose‘, keine potentiellen Kunden weit und breit. Nach über einer Stunde warten bot man uns die Fahrt als private Tour für uns drei, gegen nur ein geringen Aufpreis an.

It was my birthday and that’s why we treated ourselves to something special. We decided on a boat trip into the national park near here. In the morning we went to the collection point of the tour. We were told to wait until 8 people had gathered for the tour. Nothing going that day! No prospective clients anywhere! After more than an hour’s wait they offered to take the three of us for a little extra money.

Zur Feier des des Tages also ein wenig Luxus. Wir ereichten den geschützten Meeresbereich und sahen einige Flamingos. / That meant a little luxury to mark the occasion. We reached the protected marine area and saw some flamingos.

Just in diesem Moment eröffnete meine Mutter mir, dass ich jetzt auf der Minute, genau 26 Jahre zuvor geboren wurde. / That very moment my mother told me that I had been born exactly the same minute 26 years before.

Tulum – 05.05.2019

In einer langen Busfahrt ging es von Palenque in das nahe an der Karibik gelegene Bacalar. / It was a long bus trip from Palenque to Bacalar which is situated near the Caribbean.

Bacalar befindet sich direkt an einer Süßwasserlagune. Hier erkundeten wir zu Fuß und per Boot die traumhaft schöne Lagune mit ihren 7 verschiedenen Blautönen.

Bacalar lies on a fresh water lagoon. We explored the lagoon which was gorgeous on foot and by boat. The water contains 7 different shades of blue.

Leider war es nicht immer möglich an ihre Ufer zu gelangen, da fast der gesamte Bereich in privatem Besitz ist. / We weren’t able to get to the waterfront in many places as most of the shore was private property.

In der Nähe von Bacalar gibt es auch eine 90 m tiefe glasklare Cenote(Wasserloch). / Near Bacalar there is a so-called Cenote, a billabong, 90 meters deep and crystal clear.

Von Bacalar fuhren wir weiter zur Karibik, nach Mahahual. Hier wurden wir zum ersten Mal mit der momentanen Seegrasplage konfrontiert. Meterhoch lag das angespülte Seegras am Ufer und stank bestialisch, kaum auszuhalten.

We traveled on, starting at Bacalar toward the Caribbean, Mahahual. This was when we first met with the seaweed pest.The seaweed had been washed up on the beach and lay there meters high, stinking dreadfully. It was almost unbearable.

Unermüdlich waren Leute damit beschäftigt das Seegras zu entfernen. Doch mit jeder Welle kam neues, eine vergebliche Mühe. / People were busy removing it. But with every single new wave more of the stuff came along, it was all in vain.

Man erzählte uns, dass das Seegras in diesen Mengen früher nicht vorkam. Dieses Phänomen steht im Verdacht mit dem Klimawandel in Verbindung zu stehen. / They told us that they had never seen that amount of seaweed in the past. Seems to be a phenomenon in connection with the climate change.

Wir fuhren deswegen nach nur einer Nacht weiter nach Tulum. / Therefore we only stayed there for one night and traveled on toward Tulum.

Kaum waren wir aus dem Bus ausgestiegen fanden wir uns mitten in einem Haupturlaubsort wieder. Diese sehr touristische Seite von Mexico, kannten wir bislang noch nicht. / Having left the bus we were surrounded by a very touristic area, one of the main holiday locations. We hadn’t known Mexico’s touristic aspect yet.

Bereits am selben Tag besuchten wir den Strand und trotz bergeweise angeschwemmten Seegras waren wir begeistert von seiner Schönheit. / We visited the beach that same day and were delighted by its beauty in spite of the seaweed washed ashore by the ton.

Tags darauf gingen wir zu einem privaten Strandabschnitt. Hier sollte es weniger Seegras geben. Umgerechnet 10 Euro Eintritt (in Mexiko ein Vermögen!) mussten wir dafür bezahlen. Wenigstens waren die Strandliegen im Preis inbegriffen.

The next day we visited a private part of the beach. Alledgedly there was supposed to be much less seaweed. We had to pay about 10 € entrance fee which means a fortune in Mexico. At least the deck chairs were included.

An diesem Strandabschnitt gibt es eine starke Strömung. Einmal von ihr erfasst zieht sie einen extrem schnell hinaus auf’s Meer. / There is a strong drift at this part of the beach. Once it gets hold of you it will take you out to the sea extremely fast.

Diese Strömung erfasste mich auch gleich beim Schwimmen. Eh ich mich versah war ich schon ein gutes Stück hinaus aufs Meer gezogen worden. / It did grasp me immediately when I started swimming.

Ich konnte gerade so  noch die besorgten Gesichter, der zu mir hinüber blickenden Badegäste sehen. Da ich jedoch über diese Strömung Bescheid wusste war mir klar, dass sie nur punktuell auftritt und man schräg zum Ufer schwimmend diesem Sog entkommen kann. Das machte ich auch und zu meiner Erleichterung funktionierte es, denn ich kam dem Ufer wieder näher.

Before I knew I was taken out into the sea quite far. I could just about recognize the faces of the other bathers, looking very anxiously at me. I did know about the drift, of course, so I knew that it is only in some selective places and I also knew that you had to swim diagonally toward the beach in order to get away from it. So that’s what I did and fortunately it worked and I got nearer to the beach again.

Palenque – 01.05.2019

Von San Cristóbal fuhren wir weiter nach Palenque. Ich fühlte mich aber gar nicht gut und schon im Bus spürte ich, dass eine ordentliche Grippe im Anflug war. / We left San Cristóbal and went in the direction of Palenque. I didn’t feel well at all and in the bus I felt a big flu coming on.

Ich wurde  krank. Dennoch schaffte ich es am nächsten Tag noch mit meinen Eltern die Palenque Ruinen anzuschauen. Sie sind Tempel einer Mayastätte, mit zahlreichen beeindruckenden hohen Bauten. / I fell ill. Still, I made it together with my parents to have a look at the ruins of Palenque the following day. They are Mayan temples with numerous impressive high buildings within them.

 Nur ein kleiner Teil der Anlage ist überhaupt freigelegt worden. Der größte Teil liegt überwuchert im Dschungel und wartet auf seine ‚mehr als aufwendige‘ Restaurierung. / Only a very small part of the structure has been uncovered so far. Most of it lies in the jungle, overgrown and is waiting for its more than elaborate reconstruction.

Das was man von den Mayastätten aber sieht, ist phänomenal! / The part you can visit is phenomenal, indeed.

Man kann sämtliche Gebäude erklimmen und bekommt so eine Ahnung davon, wie das Leben hier einmal gewesen sein muss. / You can climb all the buildings and you get a glimpse of what life must have been like there once upon a time.

Wir waren schon am frühen Morgen in der Mayastätte und aus dem Dschungel rund um die Anlage waren zahlreiche Brüllaffen zu hören. Später am Morgen wurde es heißer und die Affen hörten auf zu schreien.

We arrived there early in the morning and listened to the voices of several howler monkeys around the place. Later in the morning it got hotter and they stopped howling.

Leider fühlte ich mich echt nicht gut und so fuhren wir schon früh zurück zu unserer Unterkunft.  Unfortunately, I didn’t feel well at all and so we returned to our lodging early.

Ich bekam Fieber verbrachte die nächsten Tage damit im Bett zu liegen. Schließlich ging ich zu einem Arzt, dessen Praxis einer Apotheke angeschlossenen war. Wie gefühlt ‚alle Ärzte dieser Welt‘, verschrieb er mir eine gewaltige Portion Antibiotikum. 2 verschiedene Antibiotika sollte ich nehmen. / I had a fever and stayed in bed for a few days. Finally I went to see a doctor who had his surgery next to a pharmacy. I think just about all the doctors in this world prescribe you antibiotics and a lot of them. I was supposed to take two different ones.

Die Beratung des Arztes war unglaublich preiswert, sie kostete noch nicht mal 2 Euro und die Medikamente keine 10 Euro. Nachdem ich anfing die Medizin zu nehmen ging es mir langsam wieder besser. / Seeing the doctor was really cheap, not even 2 €, the medicine was less than 10 €. After taking the medicine I slowly started feeling better.

Während ich krank war machten meine Eltern Ausflüge. Sie reisten zu verschiedenen Wasserfällen in der Region rund um Palenque. / While I was ill my parents went on sweveral tours. They traveled to different waterfalls in the vicinity of Palenque.

Besonders die Cascaden Agua Azul, mit ihrem kristallklaren Wasser fanden sie enorm beeindruckend. / They were most impressed by the cascades Agua Azul, its water being crystal clear.

Nach diesem weiteren Pausentag für mich, ging es mir soweit besser dass wir Palenque wieder per Bus verlassen konnten. / After having rested for another day, I felt better and we were able to leave Palenque by bus.
