David – 15.03.2019

Von David aus begab ich mich auf eine lange Steigung, hoch bis zu der auf 1200 m liegenden Stadt Boquete. / As from David I went on a long incline, up to the town of Boquete which is 1.200 meters high.

Da ich erfuhr, dass auch Anna und Johannes, die ich zuvor in Las Lajas getroffen hatte vor Ort waren, verabredete ich mich mit ihnen. / I found out that Anna and Johannes who I had met at Las Lajas before, were also there. So I arranged to meet them.

Zusammen bestiegen wir den Vulkan Baru, der mit seinen 3475 m gleichzeitig die höchste Erhebung Panamas ist. / We climbed the volcano named Baru which is Panama’s highest mountain at 3.475 meters.

Der Aufstieg hierfür startete um 23.00 Uhr nachts, damit man pünktlich zum Sonnenaufgang um 6 Uhr am Gipfel ist. Der Weg war breit und sogar für Geländewagen befahrbar, also nicht besonders schwierig. Doch die mit der Höhe zunehmende Kälte, hatten wir allesamt unterschätzt und wir froren sehr.

We started at 11 pm, in order to get to the top by 6 am when the sun rises. The path was wide and even passable for SUVs, not too difficult. But we hadn’t thought of the coldness aloft and we were all freezing.

Dazu kam, dass die Wanderung extrem lang war. Nach einigen Stunden berghoch, durch absolute Dunkelheit, geriet ich in eine Art Trance und die Augen fielen mir beim Gehen zu. Gegen 5.00 Uhr erreichten wir endlich den Gipfel und  bekamen den Lohn für unsere Mühen.

Apart from that, the hike took extremely long. After a few hours in total darkness and uphill all the time, I got into a kind of trance and I coudn’t keep my eyes open while I was walking. At about 5 pm we came to the peak and were rewarded for our efforts.

Der Himmel verlor langsam seine Schwärze und die Sterne machten Platz für die Sonne. Es war perfekt. / The sky slowly lost its blackness and the stars gave way for the sun. It was perfect!

Von hier konnten wir sowohl den Atlantik, als auf der anderen Seite des Gipfels, den Pazifik sehen. Während die Sonne über dem Atlantik langsam aufstieg, war der Pazifik noch komplett in Dunkelheit gehüllt. Hier leuchteten nur die Sterne. Eine unsichtbare Grenze zwischen Nacht und Tag. Absolut magisch!

We could see the Atlantic Ocean and on the other side of the peak we saw the Pacific Ocean. While the sun was rising over the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean was still completely in the dark. Only the stars were shining. An invisible border between night and day. It was magic!

Nachdem die Sonne ganz aufgegangen war, wurde es endlich etwas wärmer und langsam bekam ich auch wieder Gefühl in den Fingern. Den Abstieg liefen wir nun aber nur noch halb hinab. Dann fuhren wir per Anhalter auf der Ladefläche eines Pickup zurück nach Boquete. Jetzt erstmal ausschlafen, ich war hundemüde.
Bei einer weiteren diesmal kleineren Wanderung, über den sogenannten Pipeline Trail (der Weg führt entlang einer Wasserleitung), wanderte ich noch einmal zusammen mit Johannes und Anna.

After the sun had risen it got a little warmer and slowly some feeling got back into my fingers. We only descended halfway this time. We hitchhiked back to Boquete on the loading platform of a Pickup. I was dog-tired. Now have a good sleep!!!                                                                                                                                                 Another shorter hike with Johannes and Anna took us across the so called Pipeline Trail which is alongside a water pipeline.

Wir sahen unterwegs einen recht hohen Wasserfall. Jedoch am meisten beeindruckt hat mich ein riesiger Baum, der ganze 1000 Jahre alt sein soll!

On our way there we say a waterfall which was quite high. I was most impressed by a huge tree which is supposed to be 1.000 years old.

In Boquete traf ich zu meiner Freude auch Sol aus El Valle wieder./ To my delight, I met Sol from El Valle in Boquete again.

Innerhalb von nur wenigen Stunden fuhr ich von Boquete wieder zurück nach David.
Dort übernachtete ich noch eine Nacht in einem Hostel und überquerte dann problemlos die Grenze nach Costa Rica.
Danke Panama, es hat mir so gut gefallen, dass ich viel länger geblieben bin als zuvor gedacht. Es war schön hier zu sein.

Within a few hours only I went from Boquete to David. I stayed at a hostel for one night and then crossed to border to Costa Rica without any problems.                                                                                                                     Thanks Panama. It was so lovely here. That made me stay much longer than expected. It was nice, being here.

Santiago de Veraguas – 23.02.2019

El Valle verließ ich über eine extrem steile Straße, mit über 30 Prozent Steigung. Als ich sie schließlich erklommen hatte, bot sich mir noch einmal ein super Blick über el Valle.

I left El Valle on an extremely steep road with more than 30 % incline. Having finally made it, I had a wonderful view over El Valle again.

Leider regnete es nun gelegentlich. Die Straße war nass und rutschig. Da zu allem Überfluss auch noch Rollsplitt auf der Straße lag, kam ich bei der anschließenden steilen Abfahrt in einer scharfen Linkskurve ins Rutschen.

Unfortunately it had started raining every now and then. The road was wet and slippery. To make matters worse, there was loose gravel on the road, so I started to slip when I had to make a sharp turn left going down the steep road.

Es ging ganz schnell. Diese Kurve konnte ich unmöglich bekommen. Ich rechnete schon mit einem Sturz und Verletzungen. Doch schließlich kam ich wie durch ein Wunder an der Leitplanke zu halten.

Everything happened very fast. It was impossible to master the turn. I was already expecting to crash and hurt myself. But miraculously, I came to a halt at the crash barrier.

Ich weiß nicht wie, aber ich hatte es sogar irgendwie geschafft vom fallenden Fahrrad abzusteigen. Das Fahrrad lag unbeschadet unter der Leitplanke.

How I did it, I don’t know, but somehow I even managed to dismount the falling bike. It way laying under the crash barrier, unharmed.

Weder mir noch dem Fahrrad war etwas passiert, noch nicht mal eine Schramme! Ich stand perplex neben meinem Fahrrad und konnte mein Glück kaum fassen.

Neither I nor my bike had got any scratches, nothing had happened to us. I stood there, next to my bike and wasn’t able to believe my luck.

Weiter ging es über die verkehrsreiche Panamericana Straße. Zum Glück gibt es hier Straßenstände, an denen man sich gelegentlich erfrischen kann. / I traveled on across the very busy Panamericana. Fortunately, there were street stalls where I could refresh myself occasionally.

An einem Rasthof fragte ich ob ich zelten dürfte. / At a roadhouse I asked whether or not they would allow me to put up my tent.

Ich bekam die Erlaubnis und konnte sogar umsonst die Toiletten und Dusche benutzen. Hier gab es eine Waschmaschine in der ich für kleines Geld meine Kleidung waschen konnte. Im Gegenzug nahm ich im dazugehörigen Restaurant mein Abendessen und mein Frühstück ein.

They did and I was even allowed to use their bathroom and showers. They even had a washing machine which I could use cheaply to wash my clothes. Of course I had dinner and breakfast there at the restaurant to return the favor.

Leider habe ich an der Raststätte nicht gut schlafen können. Es war laut und zu allem Überfluss hatte ich mein Zelt anscheinend auf einem spitzen Gegenstand aufgebaut. Meine Luftmatratze war somit defekt und ich schlief die ganze Nacht auf dem harten Boden.

Unfortunately I didn’t sleep well at all there. It was rather loud and apparently my tent was sitting on something sharp. So my air mattress got a hole and I slept on the hard soil all night.

Am nächsten Morgen flickte ich meine Luftmatratze gleich in der Dusche. / The next morning, I mended my air mattress in the shower.

Nach einem weiteren Radfahrtag erreichte ich Santiago de Veraguas.
Hier wurde ich am frühen Nachmittag auf der Straße angesprochen und spontan zum Essen eingeladen! / After one more day I got to Santiago de Veraguas. Someone addressed me early that afternoon in the street and invited me for a meal.

Ich lernte Marysol und ihre sehr nette Familie kennen. Bei ihnen durfte ich übernachten und fühlte mich gleich wie zu Hause.

I met Marysol and her family who were very kind people. I was allowed to stay there over night and I felt at home at once.

Von Santiago aus unternahm ich gleich mehrere Ausflüge und kehrte immer wieder zu der netten Familie zurück.
So machte ich Abstecher zum Strand nach Santa Catalina und in die Berge nach Santa Fe.
Nach Santa Catalina fuhr ich an einem Tag die über 100 km weite Strecke.

I went on several excursions from Santiago and came back to the nice family every time. I also went to the Santa Catalina beach and into the mountains toward Santa Fé. It was a more than 100 km trip to Santa Catalina which I made in one day.

Dort angekommen zeltete ich neben einem Hostel hoch über dem Strand, auf einer malerischen Klippe. / There I camped next to a hostel high above the beach, on a picturesque cliff.

Die Sonnenuntergänge waren hier Spitze und auch der Sternenhimmel ist nachts atemberaubend. / The sunsets here are amazing and the starry sky is breathtaking.

Ich blieb in Santa Catalina 2 Nächte, bevor ich wieder nach Santiago fuhr. / I stayed at Santa Catalina for two nights before going back to Santiago.

Auch als ich mit dem Bus noch einmal zurück nach El Valle fuhr, konnte ich bei Marysols Familie mein Fahrrad stehen lassen. Insgesamt verbrachte ich so eine ganze Woche bei ihnen. Vielen Dank für alles, ihr habt mir sehr geholfen!

When I went back to El Valle by bus, I was allowed to leave my bike with Marysol’s family. All things considered, I had stayed with them for a whole week. Thanks for everything, you helped me a lot!

El Valle de Anton – 22.02.2019

In El Valle de Anton fühlte ich mich gleich heimisch./ I felt at home in El Valle de Anton right from start.

Das Klima ist hier nicht so heiß, die Berglandschaft ist schön, sprich es ist ein guter Ort zum erholen. Hier blieb ich zunächst 3 Tage. Ich fand schnell Anschluss im Hostel und unternahm mit anderen Reisenden viele Ausflüge.

The climate isn’t all that hot here, the mountains are beautiful, so it is a very good place to take a rest. I stayed there for 3 days. Very soon I made friends at the hostel and I went on many outings together with the other travelers.

Unter anderem besichtigen wir Wasserfälle in denen man baden konnte. / Among other places we visited some waterfalls where you could take a bath.

Wir besuchten ein Thermalbad in dem man eine Schlammmaske bekam und sich dann ins warme Wasser setzen konnte. / We also visited a thermal bath where we got a mud mask and then sat in the warm water.

Der schönste Ausflug war aber der zu dem Berg ‚India Dormida‘ (schlafende indische Frau). Wir wanderten einen Grad entlang, der von unten aussieht wie eine schlafende indische Frau. Deswegen auch der Name.

The most amazing trip was to a mountain called „India Dormida“ (sleeping Indian woman). We wandered along a ridge which really looked like a sleeping Indian woman from below. That’s where the name comes from.

Vom Grad aus hatte man eine fantastische Aussicht auf El Valle, das in einem alten Vulkankrater liegt. / From the ridge we had a fantastic view over El Valle which is situated in an old volcanic crater.

Hiernach verließ ich El Valle und setzte meine Fahrt an der heißen Küste fort. /  Afterward I left El Valle and went on along the hot coast.

Mir hatte es aber in El Valle so gut gefallen, dass ich nach einigen Tagen beschloss das Fahrrad unterwegs einfach an einem anderen Ort stehen zu lassen und mit dem Bus dorthin zurück zu fahren.

I had enjoyed my stay at El Valle so much, so I decided after only a few days to leave the bicycle at some other place and go back there by bus.

In dem wesentlich kühleren El Valle blieb ich nun noch eine Woche. Wieder traf ich viele interessante Leute. / It was far cooler there and I lingered around for another week.I met many interesting people again.

Wir unternahmen eine Dschungeltour zu dem Berg Gaital. Das ist eine Wanderung durch dichten Bergnebelwald mit einer atemberaubenden artenreichen Tier- und Pflanzenwelt.

We went on a jungle tour to a mountain called Gaital. You walk through dense cloud forest.The flora and fauna was breathtakingly rich in species.

Ich stapfte durch das Gestrüpp als plötzlich eine Schlingpflanze meinen Hals streifte. Sofort begann die Haut an zu brennen und obwohl ich sofort mit Wasser kühlte war noch Tage später ein Ausschlag zu sehen.

The flora and fauna was breathtakingly rich in species. While trudging through the undergrowth, suddenly a vine grazed my neck. My skin started to burn immediately and even though I started cooling it with water at once, there was still a rash to be seen a day later.

Auf der Wanderung über den glitschigen Dschungelpfad trafen wir auf einen Professor, der für die englische Universität Oxford arbeitet und auf der Suche nach neuen Spinnenarten war. Er lud uns zu einer kleinen Expedition am Abend ein. Leider gab es eine Party im Hostel, die wir nicht verpassen wollten,deswegen schlugen wir sein Angebot aus.

Wandering across the slippery path in the jungle, we met a professor who worked for the English University of Oxford and who was searching for new species of spiders. He invited us to meet him for a little expedition that evening. Unfortunately, there was a party at the hostel that night which we didn’t want to miss. So we had to refuse.

Später, die Party war im vollen Gange, da tauchte plötzlich freudetaumelnd der Professor auf. Er hatte tatsächlich eine neue Spinnenart entdeckt und diese ‚Achtung!‘ gleich in einer Schachtel mitgebracht.

Later when the party was in full swing, the professor turned up, full of joy. He had indeed found a new kind of spider and brought it with him in a box. Caution!

Die halbe Partygemeinschaft wich sofort zurück und die andere Hälfte bestaunte ungläubig das Prachtexemplar einer gigantischen Spinne. / Half of the party guests backed off and the other half stared at the gigantic spider in astonishment. A magnificent specimen!

Besonders gefreut habe ich mich, hier Sol getroffen zu haben! / I was most happy about having met Sol here.

El Valle – 06.02.2019

In Panama verbrachte ich einen Pausentag und erkundete noch etwas die Stadt. Dann fuhr ich weiter. / I had a day’s rest in Panama and went on a sightseeing tour through the town. Then I went on.

Wieder ging es auf die gefährliche Brücke über den Panama Kanal. / I had to use the most dangerous bridge across the Panama Canal again.

Auch sonst machte mir der Verkehr zu schaffen. Er ist viel schneller als in Kolumbien und die Autofahrer sind rücksichtslos. /  I had to use the most dangerous bridge across the Panama Canal again. Traffic caused big problems as well. People drive much faster there than in Colombia and the drivers are quite inconsiderate.

Dazu kommt, dass die Straßen in keinem guten Zustand sind und oft kein Seitenstreifen vorhanden ist. Die rücksichtslose Fahrweise führe ich darauf zurück, dass es hier kaum Zweiradverkehr gibt. Die Autofahrer sind somit nicht gewohnt auf langsamere Verkehrsteilnehmer, wie mich Rücksicht zu nehmen.

On top of that the roads aren’t in good shape and more than once there was no emergency lane at all.There are hardly any bicycler, so that is probably the reason for the reckless driving. Drivers are not used to consider slower road users such as me.

Nach einem anstrengenden und nervtötenden Tag auf dem Highway erreichte ich Las Guias de Oriente. Von hier aus geht eine Straße ab nach El Valle. / After a strenuous and nerve-racking day on the highway I reached Las Guias de Oriente. There is a road from here to El Valle.

Dorthin soll mich mein erster Abstecher in Panama führen. Aber nicht mehr an diesem Tag. Dafür war es jetzt zu spät. Ich sah in meiner App “iOverlander” dass es hier ein Restaurant gibt, bei dem man umsonst zelten kann, wenn man dort zu Abend isst.

That is where I wanted to go. but not that day any more. It was far too late by then. In my app „iOverlander“ I found out that there is a restaurant where you can camp for free, if you are prepared to take your dinner there.

Leider hatte das besagte Restaurant ausgerechnet heute Ruhetag und so fragte ich in der Nachbarschaft nach einem Platz für mein Zelt. Prompt bekam ich die Einladung unter einem Carport mein Zelt aufzubauen.

Unfortunately, the restaurant had a rest day just then, so I asked someone in the neighborhood for a place to camp. At once I got an invitation for putting up my tent underneath a carport.

Das Angebot nahm ich gerne an. Gerade hatte ich aufgebaut, da wurde mir sogar ein Teller mit Essen gereicht. Auch die Toilette im Haus durfte ich benutzen. Ich war begeistert. / I gladly accepted. I had just fixed my tent, when someone gave me a plate with food. I was also allowed to use their bathroom. I was so happy!

​Entspannt konnte ich so am nächsten Tag den Anstieg bis nach El Valle in Angriff nehmen. /  Therefore, I was relaxed when I tackled the ascent to El Valle the following day.

Schon Mittags kam ich dort an und beschloss im “Hostal la Casa de Juan” zu zelten. Hier sollte ich länger als geplant bleiben, aber dazu demnächst mehr. 

I got there in the early afternoon and decided to put up my tent at the „Hostal la Casa de Juan“. I was going to stay there for longer than planned, but I’ll tell you more about that later.
