Mount Isa – 11.03.2018

In der Bergbaustadt Mount Isa musste ich eine Zwangspause einlegen, da die weitere Durchgangsstraße in Richtung Townsville überflutet war. / At Mount Isa, a mining town, I had to stop for a compulsory break as the through road toward Townsville had been flooded.

Auch die Versorgungs-LKWs kamen auf den Zufahrtstraßen nicht mehr durch und so waren selbst in dieser größeren Outback-Stadt mit 21.000 Ew, in den Supermärkten kaum noch frische Lebensmittel erhältlich.

Not even the supply trucks were able to get through any more and although this was one of the larger outback towns with about 21,000 inhabitants, the supply of fresh foods in the supermarkets was running low.

Erst teilte ich mir in Mount Isa ein Motelzimmer mit Paul. Er hatte mich mit seinem Pickup mitgenommen und war nun ebenfalls hier gestrandet. / At first I shared a room at a motel with Paul at Mount Isa. He had given me a lift in his truck and he was also stranded there.

Dann wechselte ich in ein Hostel, indem ich zufällig ein paar alte Bekannte Noel, Signe und Julie wiedertraf. Wir hatten uns das erste Mal unterwegs, in einem der Roadhouses getroffen.Die drei sind mit ihren beiden Autos Richtung Ostküste unterwegs und -wie kann es anders sein – auch hier zwangweise hängengeblieben.

Then I changed hotels, having met a few old acquaintances again, Noel, Signe and Julie. We had first met at one of the road houses on the way.The three of them are under way in two cars in the direction of the east coast and – of course – had inevitably been caught here as well.

Nachdem ein paar Tage später die Straßen endlich wieder freigegeben wurden, fuhren wir zu viert weiter. / After a few days, the roads had been cleared, and the four of us started all over again.

Gut das ich jetzt erst einmal mit dem Auto unterwegs bin. Keinesfalls möchte ich irgendwo in der Wildnis festsitzen und mich am Ende noch in Gefahr begeben. /I’m so glad to be in a car now. I wouldn’t like to be trapped anywhere in the wilderness and be in danger to risk my life.

Outback – 07.03.2018

Am Abend begann es leicht zu regnen und der Himmel war bedenklich dunkel. So beschloss ich mein Zelt unter einem notdürftig Schutz bietenden Picknickunterstand aufzubauen.

In the evening it started to rain slightly and the sky got alarmingly dark. So I decided to put up my tent under a makeshift picknick shelter.

Wegen Wassermangel hatte ich beschlossen auf eine Dusche zu verzichten. Ich war deswegen leicht frustriert. Dazu war ich wie immer in letzter Zeit, ständig von einem Schwarm Fliegen umgeben, die sich respektlos an Augen, Nase, Ohren und Mund niederließen.

I had decided to go without a shower due to the lack of water. This was rather frustrating. For good measure, I was surrounded by a dense swarm of flies in those days which enjoyed establishing themselves on my eyes, ears and mouth. No respect there.

In dieser ganzen Trostlosigkeit hielt auf einmal ein Wohnmobil. Der Fahrer stieg aus und reichte mir eine kühle Cola. Wir kamen ins Gespräch und ich erfuhr, dass es deutsche Urlauber waren. Sie boten mir gleich an, dass ich die Dusche in ihrem Wohnwagen benutzen darf und füllten mir meine Trinkflaschen auf.

Amidst this sad desolation, suddenly a mobile home stopped next to me. The driver got out and offered me a cool coke. We started talking and I was told that they were German travelers. They offered me to use the shower in their caravan and filled up my drinking water.

Sogar ein Moskitonetz, dass man sich über den Kopf stülpen kann, bekam ich geschenkt. Das ist echt Gold wert bei dieser Fliegenplage. / They even gave me a mosquito net to pull over my head. This is better than gold in this fly plague.

Ich war hundemüde und so schlief ich länger als sonst. Es stürmte und regnete auch am nächsten Morgen. Auch die Fliegen waren wieder da. Die eigentlich geplanten 130 Kilometer bis zum nächsten Roadhouse werde ich heute auf keinen Fall bewältigen können.

I was exhausted and slept in the next morning. It was rainy and stormy again and the flies were there again, as well. No way would I be able to do the 130 km which I had planned to do to the nearest road house.

Gerade in dem Moment als ich trotz des Regens losfahren wollte, stoppte ein Pickup neben mir. / Just as I was going to get started in spite of the rain, a pickup stopped next to me.

Paul, der Fahrer bot mir an mich mitzunehmen. Angesichts dieser Umstände und der Unlust mich die nächsten Tage weiter zu quälen nahm ich an und fuhr sogar ca. 300 km bis nach Mount Isa mit.

Paul, the driver, offered to give me a lift. Considering the circumstances and my reluctance of torturing myself during the days to come, I accepted and went with him all the way up to Mount Isa which was 300 km away.

Outback – 06.03.2018

In Tennant Creek angekommen verspürte ich das Bedürfnis der endlosen Hitze zu entfliehen. Deswegen leistete ich mir für eine Nacht eine Ferienwohnung auf einem Campingplatz. / Having arrived at Tennant Creek, I felt the need of escaping the endless heat. That’s why I decided to treat myself to a night at a holiday apartment on a camping site.

Am gleichen Abend erfuhr ich, dass es auf meiner geplanten Strecke zur Weiterfahrt zu Überschwemmungen durch starke Regenfälle gekommen ist. /  That very evening I learned that there had been heavy rains on my planned route which had caused some flooding.

“Kann ich meine Weiterreise fortsetzen?“ / „Will I be able to continue my journey?“

Keiner mochte mir diese Frage zu beantworten und so entschied ich mich noch für eine weitere Nacht in Tennant Creek zu bleiben. Aber meine teure Ferienwohnung konnte ich mir auf keinen Fall weiterhin leisten. Ich sprach deswegen mit dem Platz-Manager über mögliche Übernachtungsalternativen.

Nobody was able to answer my question, so I decided upon yet another night at Tennant Creek. I wasn’t able, though, to afford another night at the expensive holiday home, so I talked to the manager of the camping ground about some alternatives.

Prompt bot er mir an, dass ich für einige Stunden Arbeit auf dem Platz, die nächste Nacht umsonst in der Ferienwohnung bleiben kann. So half ich etwas bei der Anlagenpflege und bekam nebenbei auch noch Goldminen in der Umgebung gezeigt.

Immediately, he offered me to stay for free in the holiday home in return for some hours‘ work on site. So, I helped him there for some time and moreover, I was shown around the gold mines in the surrounding area.

The day after, I decided to go on with my journey, hoping that the road which had been flooded and which was some hundred kilometers away, had been cleared by the time I got there.

In Tennant Creek hatte ich auch noch einmal die Möglichkeit einzukaufen. Somit konnte ich mich bestens auf meine Weiterreise vorbereiten. Am nächsten Morgen fuhr ich in aller Frühe, schon um 5 Uhr los.

I had the opportunity to do some shopping at Tennant Creek. So I was perfectly prepared for my world tour. The following morning I started very early, at five o’clock.

Unterwegs verschlechterte sich das Wetter ständig. Statt Rückenwind hatte ich nun wieder Gegenwind, der sich zum Sturm steigerte. Das bremste mich auf 8 km/h runter, und dass in meiner Situation in der ich jeden Tag 130 Kilometer fahren muss, damit ich mit meinen Wasservorräten auskomme.

The weather deteriorated constantly on my way. I had to face head winds instead of tailwinds, which boosted into a gale. I wasn’t able to do more than 8 km/h, which was really bad as I had to do about 130 km a day in order to make my water supplies last for the time being.

Zwischendrin hatte ich heute jedoch einmal das Glück, dass ein Ambulanzfahrer anhielt und mir anbot mich einige Kilometer weit mitzunehmen. Das half mir schon um einiges weiter. / In between I was lucky to meet the driver of an ambulance who stopped and gave me a lift for some kilometers. This was really helpful.

Doch als ich nach meiner langen und mühseligen Tagesetappe endlich den für meine Übernachtung ersehnten Rastplatz mit Wasser erreicht habe, musste ich feststellen dass der Wassertank leer ist. / When I finally reached the rest area which I had chosen for my overnight stay, after a painfully long and strenuous day’s trip, I had to learn that the water tank was empty.

Aber auf eine Dusche nach diesem anstrengenden Tag muss ich wohl verzichten. / I had to do without a shower, though, after this exhausting day.

Outback – 02.03.2018

Ich habe mir im Outback angewöhnt meine Etappen möglichst so zu planen, dass ich entweder an ausgewiesen 24 Std. Rest Areas oder bei einem Road House übernachte.

Traveling in the outback means having to plan my stages in such a way as to be able to reach the 24h rest areas or spend the night at a roadhouse.

Die 24 Std. Rest Areas haben meist einen Wassertank mit Wasser (kein Trinkwasser). / There is water supply at the 24h rest areas but no drinking water. You are allowed to camp there which is for free and there is a roofed bench.

Campen ist dort erlaubt und sogar kostenlos, außerdem gibt es eine überdachte Bank. / You are allowed to camp there which is for free and there is a roofed bench.

In einem Roadhouse gibt es eine Tankstelle, ein Restaurant und einen Campingplatz./ A roadhouse includes a filling station, a restaurant and a camping area.

Heute machte ich nach einem anstrengenden Tag an einer Rest Area halt./ After a long and strenuous day, I stopped at a rest area.

Wie üblich habe ich mich an einem der Wassertanks gewaschen und das Wasser auch zum Waschen meiner durchgeschwitzten Fahrradbekleidung genutzt. / I washed myself at the water tank and also used the water to wash my cycling wear which was wet-sweated.

Dann habe ich mir etwas zu essen gekocht und ‚als Moskitoschutz‘ mein Zelt aufgebaut. / Having done that I cooked myself some dinner and put up my tent in order to avoid the mosquitos.

Es wurde dunkel und mit der untergehenden Sonne kamen wie auch sonst die ersten Mücken, so dass ich in’s Zelt flüchtete. / It got dark and the first mosquitos arrived with the sinking sun as usual. So I quickly got into my tent.

Leider war es aber in der Nacht, auch wenn ich nur das Innenzelt aufgebaut hatte, so heiß dass ich kein Schlaf finden konnte. Als ich dann doch endlich schlief, wurde ich von den Windböen eines aufkommenden Unwetters geweckt.

Unfortunately it was so hot that night, even in my inner tent which was the only one I had put up, that sleep wouldn’t come. When finally I had fallen asleep, the gusty wind from an upcoming storm woke me up again.

Schon bald setzte auch Regen ein und ich flüchtete zu dem überdachten Picknicktisch. Dort blieb ich die halbe Nacht und hatte alle Hände voll damit zu tun aufzupassen, dass meine Ausrüstung nicht weggeweht wird. Was für eine schreckliche Nacht.

Soon it started raining and I fled toward the roofed picknick table. I had to stay there for half the night and I had my hands full trying to take care of my equipment. I didn’t want it to be blown away. What a terrible night!

Am nächsten Morgen machte ich mich auf dem Weg nach Tennant Creek. / The next morning I went toward Tennant Creek.

Tennant Creek ( 3.000 Ew.) ist eine etwas größere Ansiedlung in Northern Territory, in der ich die Gelegenheit nutzen möchte, mich von den zurückliegenden Strapazen etwas zu erholen bevor es weiter geht. Jetzt hatte ich endlich noch mal Rückenwind und so erreichte ich schnell und mühelos Tennant Creek.

Tennant Creek (3000 Ew.) is a place in the Northern Territory, a larger settlement, where I wanted to rest from the recent hardships before moving on. Finally, I had a tailwind and I reached Tennant Creek easily and fast.

Outback – 26.02.2018

Eine unendliche lang erscheinende ‚vor Hitze flimmernde‘ Straße liegt heute vor mir. / The road in front of me seems to be endlessly long, shimmering in the heat.

Sie führt hinauf zur nächsten Kuppe. Dort wird der Blick frei auf eine unglaublich weitläufige trockene Buschlandschaft.

It leads up toward the next hilltop. Once there, I had a good view of a unbelievably wide and dry scrubland.

Mir ist es heiß, es sind 39 Grad. Ich halte dauernd an um etwas zu trinken. Trotzdem trinke ich nicht genug, nie muss ich auf Toilette, alles schwitze ich direkt wieder aus.

I feel hot, it is 39°C. I keep stopping in order to have something to drink. Yet, I never seem to drink enough, I never need a loo, I ooze it out immediately.

Ein trockener, kraftraubender Gegenwind bläst mir in’s Gesicht. Trotz der 39 Grad und der enormen Anstrengung bin ich nicht, wie an meinem ersten Radreisetag komplett nass duchgeschwitzt.

Yet I’m not all dripping with sweat like on my first day of cycling, in spite of the 39°C and my enormous effort.

Das Klima hat sich verändert, es herrscht nun ein kontinentales Klima und es ist nicht mehr tropisch feucht heiß. / The climate has changed, it is a continental one now and it isn’t so tropically hot any more.

Mit dem Klima hat sich auch die Landschaft verändert. Buschlandschaft so weit das Auge reicht. /  The landscape has changed, too. There is scrubland as far as the eye can reach.

Wenn es hier mal regnet, dann kommt es gleich zu großflächigen Überschwemmungen. Die Straße ist an gewissen Stellen extra dafür ausgelegt überschwemmt zu werden.

In the case of rain everything here will be extensively flooded. Apparently the road is designed in such a way to take the floods if necessary.

Das jedoch bei dieser Hitze auch nur ein Tropfen Regen fällt ist schwer vorstellbar. / I can’t imagine, though, that there will even be a single drop of rain in this heat.

Seit einer halben Stunde bin ich jetzt schon keinem Auto mehr begegnet. Plötzlich höre ich ein tiefes Grollen direkt hinter mir. Es nähert sich ein sogenannter ‚Road Train‘, das ist ein riesiger Monster Lkw , der bis zu 4 Anhänger ziehen kann. Sein enormes Gewicht ruht auf bis zu 22 Achsen. Trotzdem sind diese Schwertransporter 100 km/h schnell und ziehen somit auch einen enormen Luftsog mit sich.

I haven’t met a car for at least half an hour by now. Suddenly, there is a low rumble behind me. A so-called road train is approaching me from behind. This is a huge monster truck which can pull up to four trailers. It has an enormous weight, allocated on up to 22 axles. Nevertheless, these highload transporters make about 100 km/h and their air suction is enormous.

Diesen Road Train habe ich durch den Gegenwind erst im letzten Moment anrauschen gehört. So fuhr ich einen erschrocken Schlenker zur Seite. Zum Glück hat der Fahrer mich aber rechtzeitig gesehen und überholt mich mit respektvollem Abstand.

Because of the headwinds I noticed the road train coming at the last minute. I was terrified and made a swerve to one side. Fortunately the driver had noticed me and overtook me at a respectful distance.

Wenn so ein Road Train einen zu nahe überholt, kann es sein dass man durch den Luftsog regelrecht zum LKW hingesogen wird. In dieser Situation kann es sogar passieren, dass man von einem seiner ’nicht gerade in der Spur‘ fahrenden Anhänger überrollt wird. Obwohl mich dieser Road Train mit viel Abstand überholte wurde ich wie immer, trotzdem ordentlich durchgeschüttelt.

If a road train gets too close, it might happen that you get literally sucked in and if its trailer isn’t exactly keeping course, you might even be overrun by it. The road train overtook me at a reasonable distance, but I got shaken quite badly – as always.

An manchen Tagen frage ich mich schon mal, warum ich mir das alles antue. Aber ich sehe es trotzdem als Herausforderung und bin dann auch stolz es gemeistert zu haben. Außerdem weiß ich, dass auch sehr schöne Tage kommen werden, an denen ich unendlich froh bin unterwegs zu sein.

I really ask myself at times like this one why I keep putting myself through all this. But I always consider it as a crucial challenge and having mastered it makes me very proud of myself. I’m also convinced that there will be wonderful days ahead when I’ll be happy to be under way.

Outback – 21.02.2018

Es ist soweit, endlich bin ich wieder auf Tour! / I’m finally on tour again!

Recht spät, gegen 10 Uhr morgens brach ich in Darwin auf. Auf den ersten Kilometern begleitete mich Russel und gab mir als Ortskundiger letzte Tipps für meine Weiterreise durch Northern Territory.

I left Darwin quite late, at about 10 in the morning. Russel accompanied me on the first few kilometers and as he was familiar with the area, he offered me some final tips for my onward journey through the Northern Territory.

Dann ging es auf mich allein gestellt weiter. / That done, I had to go on alone.

Traffic isn’t actually harmless here, so I used the cycle tracks around here as much as possible. Darwin is an isolated city, surrounded only by outback. So cycle tracks came to an end very soon.

Ab nun muss ich also auf der Straße fahren. Zum Glück wurde der Verkehr außerhalb der Stadt weniger. / I had to use the road from there on. Fortunately, traffic became less out of town.

Trotzdem ist der Verkehr im Outback ein stetiges Risiko für mich mit meinem Fahrrad. Auf den kommenden ‚hunderte Kilometer langen Streckenabschnitten‘ gilt für den Autoverkehr lediglich das Tempolimit 130 und die Fahrer sind nach vielen Stunden eintöniger Fahrt häufig müde und unkonzentriert.

Still, traffic is a constant risk for me and my bike. Road sections are hundreds of kilometers long, speed limit for car drivers is 130 km/h and after hours of monotonous driving, people are often tired and inattentive.

Ein Wagen stoppte und Peter, ein Arbeitskollege von der Mineralwasser Firma stieg aus. / All of a sudden, a car stopped next to me. It was Peter, a collegue of mine from the mineral water company. He got out.

Er war nach Katherine gefahren, das ist die nächste und einzige Stadt, die für die kommenden Wochen auf meiner Route liegt. Kathrin (6000 Ew.) ist gut 300 Kilometer von Darwin entfernt. Ich werde diese Stadt also erst in 3 Tagen erreichen und Peter fährt diese Strecke an einem Tag hin und zurück! Manchmal ist so ein Auto doch eine ganz schöne Sache.

He was on his way to Katherine which is the nearest and the only town after Darwin on my route during the next few weeks. Katherine has about 6,000 inhabitants and is about 300 km away from Darwin. I’ll only reach Katherine after about a 3 days‘ ride while Peter drives this distance every day to and fro. Sometimes it would be nice to have a car.

Bei dieser Hitze in der Wet Season mit dem Rad unterwegs zu sein ist jedoch ganz schön schweißtreibend. / Being on a cycle tour in the wet season turns out to be very sweaty and exhausting.

Es wurde schwül, der Himmel verdunkelte sich und verdeckte die sengende Sonne. Die Luftfeuchtigkeit stieg ins Unerträgliche, dann begann es heftig und über Stunden an zu regnen. Die Straße war nun ein einziger Bach.

It got very humid then and the sky turned dark, covering up the scorching sun. Humidity was unbearably high and then it started raining cats and dogs for hours. The road turned into a river.

The road turned into a river. The water kept running down my face. At first it tasted salty from my sweat, then there was only water. That’s quite convenient: cycling, having a shower and drinking at the same time. Great!

Es hatte wieder aufgehört zu regnen und ich kam gut voran. / After the rain had stopped, I got on quite well.

Nach 117 Kilometern erreichte ich Adelaide River. Ich war überrascht von meiner eigenen Leistung. 7 Monate habe ich so gut wie keinen Sport gemacht und bin mit dem zusätzlichen Gepäck von über 13 Litern Wasser losgefahren.

Having done a distance of 117 kilometers, I reached Adelaide River. I was surprised by my own performance. For 7 months I hadn’t done any sport and this time I’d even had to carry an additional luggage of 13 liters of water.

Zur Feier des Tages gönnte ich mir ein Bier und das Abendessen im örtlichen Wirtshaus (Pub). / To celebrate this special day, I treated myself to a beer and had dinner at the pub there.

Auch für mein Zelt fand ich einen geschützten Stellplatz. / I also found a sheltered place for my tent.

Darwin – 20.02.2018

Die letzten Tage in Darwin bereitete ich meine Weiterfahrt vor./ I prepared my onward journey during my last days in Darwin.

Meine Weiterreise von Darwin nach Sydney, wird alles andere als einfach für mich sein. Erst in 2500 Kilometern werde ich an die Ostküste stoßen und bis dahin in sehr dünn besiedeltem Gebiet unterwegs sein.

This journey ( from Darwin to Sydney) won’t be easy at all for me. It will be 2,500 km before I reach the east coast and the area in between is very sparsely populated.

Es gibt nur alle 100 km bis 260 km als einzige Versorgungsmöglichkeit, Tankstellen (Roadhouses) in denen man auch etwas kaufen kann./ There are roadhouses every 100 km up to 260 km where you can buy things and this is the only possibility of getting any supply at all.

I have the highest respect for the challenge of water supply. I’ll have to carry up to 20 liters of water with me. This means a lot of extra weight.

Leider wird im ersten Gebiet das ich durchfahre, auch noch Regenzeit sein und ich muß sowohl mit Überflutungen als auch mit drückender Hitze rechnen.

Unfortunately, there will still be the rainy season in the area which I will be crossing first, so I will have to put up with floods and oppressive heat at the same time.

Das alles macht es nicht einfach und da es im Outback auch kein Mobiltelefon-Empfang gibt habe ich mir, um im Ernstfall wenigstens Hilfe holen zu können, einen Notfall-Sender gekauft. Über diesen kann man, unabhängig vom Mobiltelefonnetz, über Satellit einen Notruf absetzen.

This isn’t going to be easy at all and as there is no mobile phone reception in the outback, I bought myself an Emergency Locator Transmitter in order to get help if needed. That way, you can make an emergency call via satellite if there is no mobile phone network.

Darwin – 17.02.2018

Zurück in Darwin ( von Deutschland über Singapur) holten mich frühmorgens Brett mit Stephan, meinem Arbeitskollegen von der Sprudelfabrik, vom Flughafen ab.

Having arrived back in Darwin (from Germany via Singapore), my colleagues from the mineral water factory, Brett and Stephan, picked me up at the airport.

Brett hatte mir angeboten dass ich, solange ich wieder in Darwin bin, bei ihm in seiner neuen Wohnung unterkommen kann. /Brett had offered me to stay with him at his new apartment as long as I was going to stay in Darwin.

Schön nochmal hier zu sein./ Nice to be here again.

Nach einem kleinen Frühstück spürte ich erst wie müde ich eigentlich war und schlief den ganzen Tag über./ After a small breakfast I felt exhausted and I slept during the entire day.

Mittlerweile ist hier Regenzeit, es ist durchgehend sehr schwül und und es regnet jeden Tag. /Meanwhile it is rainy season here, it is always humid and damp and it rains day after day.

Meine erste Woche in Darwin nutzte ich, um meine baldige Weiterfahrt anzugehen. Ich packte zur Probe und wechselte die Reifen an meinem Fahrrad.

During my first week, I got my soon-to-be onward journey organized. I did some packing for trial and changed wheels on my bike.

Dennoch fand ich Zeit meinem Freund Terry und seiner Frau Kylie bei der Einrichtung ihres ersten eigenen Ladens zu helfen und mit ihnen Regale aufzubauen./ Still, I took time to help my friend Terry and his wife Kylie to furnish their first own shop and to help them put up shelves.

Actually, I had planned to stay in Darwin for only one week before moving on, but Brett gave me a job at the mineral water factory. So I decided to stay for another week. I did the nightshift as I still suffered from jetlag. Therefore I was only able to sleep in the day.

Wie schon zuvor in Deutschland muss ich mich nun langsam auch von meinen Freunden in Australien verabschieden./ Now I have to start saying goodbye to my friends in Australia like I had already done in Germany before.
