08.03.2017 – Indien

Nachdem ich mich von meiner Horrorbusfahrt erholt hatte, begab ich mich in Richtung Moreh, der indischen Grenzstadt zu Myanmar. Doch unterwegs hielt ich zunächst am Rande von Imphal noch einmal an, um mir in einem kleinen Shop ein neues T-Shirt zu kaufen.

After having recovered from my horrible bus ride, I traveled in the direction of Moreh, the Indian border town to Myanmar. On my way there I stopped on the outskirts of Imphal in order to buy myself a new T-shirt.

After having tried on several of them, I suddenly found a T-shirt which had printed „Rock am Ring“ on the front . Crazy!

Nach einigem Anprobieren entdeckte ich plötzlich ein T-Shirt mit einem mir sehr bekannten Aufdruck: ‚Rock am Ring‘. Wahnsinn!

Selbst in der tiefsten Provinz von Indien, weiß man von dem – in meiner Heimat stattfindenden – großen Rockfestival am Nürburgring. Ich war zwar noch nie bei Rock am Ring, aber dass dieses Musikfestival so bekannt ist, macht mich stolz.

Even in this provincial backwater of India they know about the great rock festival which takes place at the Nürburgring in my home region. I’ve never been there yet, but I was so proud to learn how famous this music festival is.

Das T-Shirt musste ich mir natürlich kaufen. Im Gegensatz zu den Original T-Shirts vom Festivalgelände kostete mich meines jedoch nur 3,- €.

Of course, I had to buy this T-shirt. Unlike the prices of the original T-shirts at the festival site, mine was only three Euros.

08.03.2017 – Indien

Im Bezirk Manipur, indem ich gerade bin, kommt es öfters zu Konflikten zwischen Rebellen und dem indischen Staat. Ausgerechnet jetzt steht auch noch die Wahl in Manipur an. Deshalb wimmelt es hier nur so von Soldaten, die die Wahl sichern sollen. Geschätzt jedes dritte Auto auf der Straße, ist vom Militär.

In the area of Manipur where I’m staying just now, conflicts between rebels and the Indian State take place frequently. Now, of all things, there is going to be an election in Manipur. This is why the place is swarming with soldiers who are supposed to safeguard the election. Roughly every third car in the streets is a military vehicle.

I had to sleep over once more in the mountains to reach the border town of Moreh. There weren’t any hotels there, but I felt secure and therefore I decided to camp wild. The camping site was beautifully situated on a mountain and so I really enjoyed the beautiful view and the sunset.

Um die Grenzstadt Moreh zu erreichen, musste ich in den Bergen einmal zwischen übernachten. Es gibt hier keine Hotels, aber ich fühlte mich sicher und deswegen entschloss ich mich wild zu zelten. Der Zeltplatz war sehr schön auf einem Berg gelegen und so genoss ich die schöne Aussicht und den Sonnenuntergang.

Da ich auf meiner Strecke in den Bergen kaum Militär sah, ging ich davon aus, dass diese eher die Wahllokale in den Orten sichern und nicht im Gebirge sind.

I hadn’t seen a lot of military on my way up the mountain, so I expected them to be in the villages or towns and secure the polling stations – I never expected them to be in the mountains.

The next morning, though, when I walked my bike back to the road, I was shocked to find out that a group of soldiers with rifles were sitting in ambush not far from my overnight place. After we all had recovered from the shock of this unexpected meeting, they greeted me friendly, shook hands with me and let me move on.

Doch am nächsten Morgen, als ich gerade wieder mein Fahrrad Richtung Straße schob, stellte ich erschrocken fest, dass eine Gruppe von Soldaten unweit meiner Übernachtungsstelle mit Gewehren auf der Lauer lag. Nachdem die Soldaten und ich mich, von dem Schock unserer unverhofften Begegnung erholt hatten, grüßten sie mich freundlich, schüttelten mir die Hand und ließen mich weiter ziehen.

Wenig später traf ich erneut auf eine Gruppe Soldaten.

Ihr Offizier hatte extra seinen Wagen anhalten lassen, weil er mit mir ein Gespräch anfangen wollte. Er sagte mir, dass es ihm langweilig sei und teilte mit mir sein Frühstück. Das kam mir ganz gelegen, denn ich hatte selber noch nicht gefrühstückt und auch keine Lebensmittel mehr dafür vorrätig.

A little later, I met another group of soldiers. Their officer had his car stopped in order to start a conversation with me. He told me he was bored and he wanted to share his breakfast with me. This really suited me as I hadn’t had breakfast yet and I didn’t have any food left for it any more.

05.03.2017 – Indien

Am Morgen nach meiner Übernachtung im Neubau des Kioskbesitzers, brachte er mich mit seinem Auto zum Bus. Mein Fahrrad wurde auf das Busdach gelegt.

In the morning after my stay in the kiosk owner’s new house, he took me to the bus station in his car. My bike was placed on the roof of the bus.

18 Stunden Busfahrt lagen jetzt vor mir. Ich hatte einen der hintersten Sitzplätze im Bus, dass machte die Busfahrt zum absoluten Höllenritt.

I was seated on one of the back seats which made the bus journey an absolute nightmare. The roads were so bad that I was hurled around all the time. Once I was even hurled right up to the ceiling. As soon as I dozed off, my head would crash against the window which made me wide awake again.

Die Straßen waren so schlecht, dass ich ständig herumgeschleudert wurde. Einmal wurde ich sogar bis zur Decke hochgeschleudert. Sobald ich kurz eingenickt war schlug mein Kopf gegen die Fensterscheibe und ich war wieder hellwach.

Mitten in der Nacht hielt unser Bus an einem Checkpoint an. Wir hatten die Grenze zum Bezirk Nagaland erreicht. Ein Soldat ging durch den Bus und als einziger Fahrgast musste ich zur Kontrolle aussteigen. Ich hatte die Befürchtung, dass ich nicht mehr weiter mitfahren konnte, da es in diesem Bezirk schon mal Konflikte gibt. In einem solchen Fall, kann man als Tourist das Gebiet nur mit Sondergenehmigung bereisen.

In the middle of the night our bus stopped at a checkpoint. We had reached the border of the district Nagaland. A soldier walked through the bus and I was the only passenger who had to leave the bus for checking purposes. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to continue my bus ride as there are conflicts in this area at times. In this case you can only travel this area as a tourist with a special permit.

Ich hatte aber Glück, denn mein Pass wurde nur kontrolliert. Von den Grenzbeamten wurde ich sehr freundlich behandelt und bekam sogar Tee angeboten.

Weiter ging also die Tortur von einer Busfahrt.

I was lucky, though, they only checked my passport. I was treated in a most friendly way by the border officials and they even offered me some tea. My nightmare went on.

So langsam mache ich mir auch ernsthafte Sorgen um mein Fahrrad, das nur lose auf dem Dach lag. An dessen Unversehrtheit glaubte ich, nach dem gefühlten zehntausendsten Schlagloch, auch nicht mehr. Bei einem Busstop kletterte ich auf das Busdach und war positiv überrascht. Meinem Fahrrad ging es gut, nicht ein Kratzer war daran zu sehen.

Meanwhile I was seriously worried about my bike, lying loosely on the roof of the bus. After what felt like zillions of potholes, I never expected my bike to be intact any more. When the bus stopped I climbed the roof and was positively surprised. My bike was fine, there wasn’t even one scratch on it.

Nach dieser schrecklichen nächtlichen Busfahrt erreichte ich am frühen Morgen, völlig fertig Imphal. Ich verkroch mich gleich in das nächste Hotel um mich zu erholen.

After this horrible night ride I reached Imphal early in the morning, dead beat. At once, I went to the nearest hotel in order to recover.

04.03.2017 – Indien

Von Guwahati fuhr ich los nach Shillong. Ich wollte von hier aus über kleine Straßen, die auf meiner Karte eingezeichnet waren, Richtung Imphal und somit zum Grenzübergang Moreh fahren. Der Weg nach Shillong war zwar sehr schön aber auch sehr bergig. Es ging fast nur berghoch. Von meiner Krankheit und meiner letzten schlaflosen Nacht war ich jedoch noch so geschwächt, dass ich an den Rand meiner Leistungsfähigkeit kam. Eigentlich wollte ich nicht mehr weiter.

Starting off at Guwahati, I went on to Shillong. I intended to travel from there in the direction of Imphal and the border crossing point Moreh, using small roads which were marked on my map.The way to Shillong was gorgeous but very hilly too. I had to go uphill nearly all the time. I was still weakened by my recent illness and the previous sleepless night, so I reached the limit of my capabilities. In fact, I didn’t want to go any further.

Doch am späten Nachmittag traf ich einen indischen Motorradfahrer, der in 110 Tagen ganz Indien bereisen möchte und mir Mut machte, dass es zur Stadt Shillong nicht mehr weit wäre. Also beschloss ich in das Stadtzentrum weiter zu fahren und mir dort ein Zimmer zu gönnen.

But the same afternoon I met an Indian motorcyclist who was going to travel the whole of India within 110 days and who bolstered me up, telling me that Shillong wasn’t far away any more. So I decided to go on and into the center of the city of Shillong and treat myself to a room.

Nach meiner zuvor verbrachten Nacht am Bahnhof von Guwahati, hatte ich es auch bitter nötig noch einmal auszuschlafen. Auch auf der Karte war es echt nicht mehr weit bis Shillong, aber die letzten 20 km bis zur Stadt waren eine Tortur.

I really had to get a good night’s sleep in after having stayed over at the Guwahati station the previous night.On the map it didn’t look as if it were far to Shillong at all, but the last 20 km were a real ordeal. 

Es ging -anders als ich mir es gedacht hatte- immer weiter bergauf. Normalerweise liegen Städte ja meistens im Tal, nicht so Shillong. Völlig fertig und zittrig vor Unterzuckerung kam ich in der Dunkelheit am Stadtrand von Shillong an. Weiter konnte ich an diesem Tag wirklich nicht mehr fahren.

On the map it didn’t look as if it were far to Shillong at all, but the last 20 km were a real ordeal. It went uphill all the time, which I hadn’t expected. Normally, towns are situated in valleys, not this one! I was dead beat and trembling from low blood sugar when I got to the outskirts of Shillong in the dark. I definitely couldn’t go on that same day.

Erschöpft kaufte ich mir an einem Kiosk ein paar Snacks und erkundigte mich nach einer Übernachtungsmöglichkeit in der Nähe. Es war jedoch keine Übernachtungsmöglichkeit vorhanden, doch der Kioskbesitzer erlaubte es mir, in seinem im Bau befindenden Neubau, mein Zelt aufzubauen. Außerdem versorgte er mich mit Essen.

Completely exhausted, I bought myself some snacks at a kiosk and asked about a place to spend the night. There wasn’t any around but the owner of the kiosk allowed me to put up my tent in his new house which was still under construction. He also provided me with some food.

I found out that you can only use the road which I had intended to take in the direction of the border if you drive an SUV. Additionally, I didn’t have much time left before I had to leave the country.

Ich erfuhr das die Straße, die ich zu meiner Weiterfahrt Richtung Grenze nehmen wollte, nur mit Allradfahrzeugen zu befahren ist. Dazu kam, dass mir auch nicht mehr viel Zeit bis zu meinem Ausreisetag blieb.

Daher entschied ich mich am nächsten Tag, ein Busticket zu kaufen. Damit fuhr ich meine anstrengende letzte Tagesetappe wieder ‚zurück‘ bis nach Guwahati und im gleichen Bus direkt weiter über Nagaon bis zur Stadt Imphal.

So I decided to buy a bus ticket for the next day. This way, I was going to go back the same strenuous day’s stage towards Guwahati and on the same bus, I would go via Nagaon to the town of Imphal.

 

03.03.2017 – Indien

Besonders schön und beeindruckend fand ich in Indien die kunterbunten Märkte. Hier bieten kleine Bauern und Händler ihre Waren an. / I was most impressed with the Indian markets. Small farmers offer their goods there.

Exotische Früchte, Gemüse und Blumen werden zu fairen Preisen verkauft. / You can buy exotic fruit, veggies and flowers at a very fair price.

Diesem lebhaften Treiben zuzusehen, war für mich immer sehr interessant. / I found it amazing to watch this lively bustle time and again.

02.03.2017 – Indien

Die Genehmigung für den Grenzübertritt nach Myanmar wird auf den Tag genau ausgestellt. Um nach meiner Krankheit noch pünktlich einreisen zu können, entschied ich ein Teilstück meiner noch zu bewätltigenden Strecke, mit dem Zug von Alipurduar bis nach Guwahati zu fahren.

My entry permit was made out for a precise date. In order to make it on time despite my condition, I decided to take a train from Alipurduar to Guwahati, which was part of the distance I still had to cope with.

The train was a record-breaking eight hours late. Apparently this is common in India. Furthermore, it was very difficult to get my bike transported on the train, despite the information I’d had from the lady who sold me the ticket. So I made good use of the waiting period, dissembled my bike completely and had it sewn in.

Der Zug hatte rekordverdächtige 8 Stunden Verspätung. Das ist in Indien anscheinend keine Seltenheit. Auch der Transport meines Fahrrads mit dem Zug, stellte entgegen vorheriger Beteuerung der Ticketverkäuferin, doch ein Problem dar. Die Abfahrtszögerung nutze ich deswegen um meine Fahrrad komplett auseinander zu bauen und einnähen zu lassen.

Es gab kein Gepäckabteil in dem Zug und so teilte ich meinen reservierten Schlafplatz mit meinem gesamten Gepäck.

There was no luggage compartment on the train, so I shared my sleeping place which I had reserved beforehand, with all my luggage.

Nach langer, langer Zugfahrt erreichte ich Guwahati statt am Nachmittag, mitten in der Nacht. Ich hatte überhaupt keine Motivation mir jetzt noch ein Zimmer zu suchen.

After a tedious long journey, I arrived in Guwahati in the middle of the night instead of the afternoon. I really didn’t feel like looking for a room to sleep by then.

Am Bahnsteig und in der Bahnhofshalle fielen mir direkt die vielen Reisenden auf, die auf dem Boden übernachteten. Ich überlegte hin und her und kam auf die Idee, mein Zelt direkt vor dem Bahnhof aufzubauen. Neben mir schliefen wirklich arme Menschen, darunter auch Straßenkinder. Da hier die Polizei patrouillierte, fühlte ich mich relativ sicher. Schlaf fand ich aber dennoch kaum, denn es war sehr laut und ich befürchtete, dass ich als Ausländer von der Polizei direkt kontrolliert würde.

As far as I could see, there were lots of travelers on the platform and in the railway building, sleeping on the ground. So, after some thinking back and forth, the idea occurred to me, to put up my tent right in front of the station. Many really poor people were sleeping next to me, street kids as well. The police were constantly patrolling, so I felt quite secure. I hardly got any sleep, though, as it was very noisy there and I was worried about being monitored by the police as I was a foreigner.

The next morning as soon as I crawled out of my tent, crowds of people gathered just gazing at me. I took a photo of them all, then packed up everything as fast as I could and left.

Am nächsten Morgen kroch ich aus dem Zelt und war sofort umringt von einer Traube von unzähligen Passanten, die mich einfach nur anguckten. Ich machte ein Foto von allen, baute schnell ab, belud mein Fahrrad und fuhr weiter.

01.03.2017 – Indien

Von Kalkutta reiste ich weiter nach Shiliguri. / Starting from Kolkata, I traveled on to Shiliguri.

Während der Fahrt ging mir das Geld aus und ich konnte nicht wie sonst Bargeld aus den Geldauomaten beziehen, da die Geldlieferanten der Banken streikten. Auch Wechselstuben waren in den kleinen Dörfern nicht vorhanden.

During this journey, I ran out of money. I wasn’t able to get any cash at the automatic teller machines (ATM), as even the banks didn’t get any money due to a strike. There were no exchange offices in these small villages, either.

Yet, I wanted to treat myself to a hotel room. Meantime I had extremely little cash, so I couldn’t even pay a bill of 12 Euros. After some back and forth, the hotel manager had the idea of offering me to pay him by filling up his moped at the gas station. Card payment was possible there. So, we went there and it really worked out as planned.

Trozdem wollte ich mir ein Hotelzimmer gönnen. Ich hatte aber mittlerweile so extrem wenig Bargeld, dass ich noch nicht mal die Rechnung von umgerechnet 12,- € bezahlen konnte. Nach einigem Hin- und Her, um zu planen wie ich die Rechnung anderweitig begleichen konnte, kam der Hotelbesitzer auf eine Idee. Er schlug mir vor, dass ich die Rechnung mit dem Volltanken seines Mopeds bezahlen kann. An der Tankstelle sei Kartenzahlung möglich. Wir fuhren dorthin und tatsächlich es funktionierte wie geplant.

Am nächsten Tag erreichte ich eine größere Stadt , in der ich einen Geldautomaten fand, der (noch) ausreichend mit Bargeld bestückt war. Es hatte sich auch schon eine lange Schlange vor dem Automaten gebildet. Nach langem Warten konnte ich schließlich tatsächlich Geld abheben. Was für ein befreiendes Gefühl.

The next day, I arrived at a bigger city where I found an ATM with enough cash in it. There were many people waiting in line. When it was my turn after having waited for quite some time, I was really able to withdraw my money. I felt so relieved!

In Shiliguri wurde ich zum ersten Mal seit meinem Reisebeginn richtig krank.

In Siliguri I fell badly ill for the first time since I started this journey. I got a long and continuous fever and found out that my symptoms might well be an indication of malaria. For fear of this disease, I swallowed a malaria remedy and went to see a doctor. He reassured me that it wasn’t malaria, but there was something wrong with my stomach.

Ich bekam lang anhaltendes Fieber und recherchierte, dass meine Symptome auch ein Anzeichen für Malaria sein konnten. Aus Angst vor dieser Krankheit, nahm ich direkt ein Malaria Mittel und ging zum Arzt. Er beruhigte mich, es wäre keine Malaria , sondern mit meinem Magen sei etwas nicht in Ordnung.

Ich bekam zahlreiche Tabletten von ihm verschrieben. In der angrenzenden Apotheke verkaufte man mir die Tabletten ohne Packungsbeilagen, so wusste ich nicht genau was ich da nehme. Von einigen der Tabletten wurde mir schwindelig, also setzte ich diese ab. Der Arztbesuch und die Medikamente haben übrigens nur ca. 10 Euro gekostet.

He gave me a prescription for several kinds of tablets. In the pharmacy, though, they gave them to me without any package information leaflets, so I didn’t even know what I was taking. Some of them made me dizzy, so I stopped taking them. My visit to the doctor, including the tablets, only cost about 10 Euros.

Durch meine Krankheit konnte ich nicht mehr meinen, eigentlich geplanten, mehrtägigen Ausflug ins Himalayagebirge machen, auf den ich mich gefreut hatte.

Unfortunately, due to my illness, I wasn’t able to visit the Himalaya for several days as I had planned.

Nachdem ich mich gerade wieder erholt hatte, wurde ich auf der Weiterfahrt nach nur zwei Tagesetappen erneut krank. Ich musste abermals weit weg von zu Hause alleine in einem Hotel meine Krankheit auskurieren und fühlte mich verloren und einsam. Diesmal hatte ich neben Durchfall und Fieber auch Erbrechen.

When I had recovered, I fell ill again after only two days of traveling. I was forced to stay in a hotel again, far from home, feeling alone and lonely in order to get back on my feet. Apart from a temperature and diarrhoea, I was vomiting, too.

Meinen Zeitplan selber mit dem Rad, rechtzeitig zum Einreisedatum meines Visa am 10.03. die 900 km bis Grenze zu Myanmar zu schaffen, konnte ich nach diesen Krankheitstagen endgültig nicht mehr erreichen.

After having been ill for so many days, I had to reconsider my schedule. I wouldn’t been able to make the 900 km to the border of Myanmar by March 10, which was the date of entry in my visa, on my bike.

 

26.01-26.02.17 – Indien

In Indien habe ich mich trotz der vielen, oft sehr armen, Menschen stets sicher gefühlt. Auch Diebstahl war eigentlich nie ein Thema.

I have always felt secure while in India although many people there are very poor. There has never been such a thing as theft.

Once though, when I had put up my tent in a small village under a shelter, being used for a church, I was invited to join some of the villagers for a cruise on a motorbike. They assured me that my things were safe in my tent. After my return, I realized that someone had been in my tent, as it hadn’t been closed up again properly. At first I didn’t notice that something was missing.

Einmal jedoch, als ich in einem kleinen Dorf in einem Unterstand, der als Kirche genutzt wurde, mein Zelt aufgebaut hatte wurde ich von einigen Bewohnern zu einer kleinen Rundfahrt mit dem Roller eingeladen. Das meine Sachen im Zelt sicher wären, versicherte man mir. Nachdem ich zurückkam stellte ich fest, dass jemand an meinem Zelt war, denn es war nicht mehr richtig verschlossen. Zunächst fiel mir aber nicht auf, dass etwas fehlte.

Am nächsten Morgen war jedoch mein Navigationsgerät nicht auffindbar.

The next morning, I couldn’t find my navigation device anywhere.

Ich war mir aber nicht ganz sicher, ob ich es vielleicht nicht doch verloren hatte. Aus diesem Grund und weil ich außerdem niemanden aus der Dorfgemeinschaft des Diebstahls bezichtigen wollte, erzählte ich lediglich von dem Verlust meines Navis. Eine Familie aus dem Dorf bat ich , sich bei mir zu melden, falls mein Navi doch noch auftauchen sollte. Ich rechnete aber nicht damit, dass ich jemals wieder etwas von meinem vermissten Navi hören würde.

I wasn’t quite sure if I hadn’t lost it somewhere, though. For that reason and because I didn’t want to accuse any villager of robbery, I only told them that I couldn’t find it. I asked one village family to contact me in case someone found it. Even though I didn’t really expect to hear about it ever again.

Zu meiner Überraschung bekam ich nach 4 Tagen die Nachricht, dass ein Kind mein Navi gefunden habe. Es soll es für einen Gameboy gehalten haben und wollte es wohl für mehrere 100 $ verkaufen. Meine Bekannten wollten mir das Navi zurückgeben, aber nun war ich schon 400 km von ihrem Dorf entfernt.

To my surprise, about four days later, it got the message that a child had found my navigation device. Apparently he or she had considered it to be a gameboy and had tried to sell it for a few hundred dollars. My contacts wanted to return it to me, but I was about 400 km away from the village by that time.

So fasste ich den Entschluss, dass es das Beste wäre, wenn man mir das Navi in die nächste Stadt, nach Kalkutta schicken würde.

So, I asked them to send it after me to Kolkata, the nearest town. For this reason I needed a mailing address there. After a long search, I found a Warmshowers host who was prepared to take the parcel on.

Dafür brauchte ich vor Ort eine Postadresse. Nach langem Suchen fand ich einen Warmshower-Gastgeber, der bereit war das Paket in Kalkutta in Empfang zu nehmen.

Das Suchen der Adresse und das Abklären der Details mit meinen Bekannten aus dem Dorf kostete unglaublich viel Zeit und Nerven.

It was very time-consuming and nerve-racking, first to find out the address and then to arrange the details with my contacts in the village.

Mein Bekannter sagte er habe kein Geld und ich solle ihm das Geld für das Porto in Höhe von umgerechnet 15,- €, am besten vorstrecken. Das war mir sehr suspekt und als es mir nicht möglich war, ihm das Geld vorab zu überweisen, sendete er schließlich das Paket doch noch ab.

The villager asked me to pay about 15 Euros for the postal charges in advance as he didn’t have any money, but I was a bit suspicious. Anyway, I wasn’t able to send him the money at once, so he dispatched the parcel after all.

Something went wrong with the parcel service at the delivery in Kolkata, so they returned it to the sender. That was a disaster.

Jedoch ging jetzt bei der Auslieferung des Paketdienstes in Kalkutta etwas schief und das Paket wurde wieder zurück zum Absender geschickt. Es war eine Katastrophe.

Meinem Bekannten im Dorf überwies ich das ausgemachte Porto und bat ihn danach das Paket ein 2. Mal zu schicken. Doch erst war es angeblich nicht zu ihm zurückgekommen und danach wollte er wieder, das mir verdächtig hoch erscheinende Porto, in Vorkasse bezahlt bekommen.

I transferred the money we had agreed on, to my contact in the village and asked him to send the parcel for the second time. At first, he claimed he hadn’t got the money, then he wanted me to pay him in advance once more. But the sum he asked for, seemed quite high to me.

This wrangling to and fro took up several weeks and in the meantime I had nearly traveled the whole of India.

Das ganze Hin-und Her dauerte Wochen und inzwischen hatte ich schon fast Indien durchquert.

Zu meinem Kontakt aus dem Dorf und zu dem indischen Paketdienst hatte ich das Vertrauen verloren und somit begrub ich meine Hoffnungen auf ein Wiedersehen mit meinem Navi.

I really had lost my confidence in the person from the village and especially in the Indian parcel service. Anyway, I buried all hopes to ever see my navigation device ever again.

07.02.2017 – Indien

Auf dem weiten Weg nach Kalkutta habe ich fast ausschließlich gezeltet. Nur einmal übernachtete ich im Hotel. Öfters wurde ich auch eingeladen. So sammelte ich sehr viele wertvolle Erfahrungen mit den Menschen vor Ort. Insbesondere bei Lehrern die Englisch unterrichten, war ich häufiger zu Gast. So konnten wir uns unterhalten und ich erfuhr allerhand über das Land und das Leben in Indien.

On my long way to Kolkata, I slept in my tent nearly all the time. Only once I stayed overnight in a hotel. I was also invited quite frequently. This way, I gained a lot of experience with people on site. Mainly the English teachers loved to invite me. So we had long talks and I learned a lot about the country and life in India.

Einmal durfte ich sogar in einer Internatsschule zelten. Das war eine ganz besondere Erfahrung. Ich sah wie einfach ausgestattet, die Schüler dort untergebracht waren und dennoch beklagte sich keiner.

Once I was even allowed to pitch up my tent at a boarding school. This was quite a special experience for me. I saw how simple and humble the equipment for the boarders was and nevertheless, nobody complained.

Während meines Aufenthalts fiel der Strom aus und so fuhr ich mit einem der Lehrer mit dem Motorroller Kerzen kaufen. Ohne die Kerzenbeleuchtung wäre ein gemeinsames Abendessen nicht möglich gewesen., da es bereits stockdunkel war.

When I was there, we had a blackout, so one of the teachers and I went off on his motorbike to buy some candles. It was pitch-black already, so we wouldn’t have been able to eat our supper without the light of the candles.

Bei einer anderen Einladung erfuhr ich viel darüber, wie öfters in Indien über westliche Ausländer gedacht wird.

When I was invited somewhere else, I heard a lot about the way, Indians think of the Westerners.

Zum einen werden die westlichen Industriestaaten wegen ihrer wirtschaftlichen Stärke bewundert. Zum anderen erfuhr ich aber, dass es auch Vorbehalte wegen der vermeintlichen sexuellen Freizügigkeit bei uns gibt. Selber haben die meisten Inder keinen Sex vor der Ehe. Dafür konsumieren sie aber oft massenhaft Pornos, in denen die meisten Darsteller aus dem Westen stammen. Da viele dieser Videos abnormale Handlungen zeigen, nehmen es manche Inder als bare Münze und denken bei uns hätten alle mit allem und jedem Sex.

On one hand, they admire the western industrial countries for their economic strength, on the other hand, though, they think we are all sexually permissive which they object to. Most Indians don’t have sex before they get married. However, they consume masses of porn movies where most actors are from the West. Because most of these videos show abnormal actions, so they take these at face value and believe that we all have sex with everything and everybody.
